Case Trimming Question

Is it better to measure and trim rifle cases before or after sizing? I have heard both sides. Doing it after sizing seems to defeat the purpose of a turret press. Opinions?

You can't trim them before sizing because they will get longer again when you size them.
And probably some more longer then others.
So, you are back to square one.

Also, the neck turning cutter pilot is a loose fit in an unsized neck and you may get chatter or wobble.

If you are using a progressive press, just size them all in station 1 and trim them & chamfer/debur, then you are ready to load.
Just skip sizing them again.

Neck size only if you can, full legth sizeing can cause you more trouble, and chances are you don't need to size your case that much. I full legth size about every 3rd loading. but I don't shoot hot loads.

Always after sizing... and note that it can potentially be better to full-length size and it may depend on the type of rifle you're reloading for. Best to do some looking in the manuals and make up your mind taking into account the pros and cons of full length vs. neck sizing. Proplinker is 100% correct to say that it's usually better to neck size, but it also matters if you're reloading for more than one rifle. Once you neck size, you're basically fitting those cases to one rifle. If you're loading for some semi-autos and some lever actions, it CAN be better to full length size. I have one recommendation for you: get yourself a case gauge if you're full length sizing and use it. It IS possible to oversize cases, depending on the brand dies you're using.
