Hello All
charter arms 1976 22 magnum pathfinder 6''.
recently aquired. cases sticking and very difficult to eject.
guy down at shooting range said looks like someone was shooting 22lr through this gun and its has a ridge down at the end of cylinder that he thought looked like built up lead which would make empty cases hard to eject.
a couple pics. he said to put a brush in a drill and try to remove excess lead.
not being a gunsmith i wanted to get more opinions.
trying to attach a couple of pics and hope they are clear.
what do the more experienced folks think and what action should be taken.;)
thanks a bunch.

Tough to shoot 22LR through a magnum chamber as the magnum case is bigger diameter than the bullet, making a LR a sloppy fit. What you are seeing at the front end is the chamber throat, it's supposed to be there. Most likely cause of sticking is burrs at the other end of the chambers from dry firing (firing pin strikes). If it's burred up you can either buy a tool to iron them out, or take a sharp pocket knife or jeweler's file and remove them.

Yep!

I don't see anything in the pictures that is not supposed to be there.
Except the very rough reamer marks Charter left in the throats.

If the chamber walls are as rough, you may have to polish the chambers to get the expanded cases to let go.

Best suggestion I have is to closely examine a cylinder full of fired cases. Keep track of which holes they come out of by marking them with a sharpie pin.

Where they are sticking should leave some tiny scratches on the empties.
Once you find that, you can go from there to fix it.

BTW: Have you tried more then one brand of ammo?
Might do that first and see if other brands stick too.

ammo

hello all
i have only tried fifty winchester and fifty cci.
the cci seemed a little easier to remove but not easy per say.
i will do as you say (examine spent cases) next time i shoot the gun and post results.
looking into the cylinder from the loading side i see a little buildup
where the end of the case would expand when shot. this is using a jewelers loupe so its not real easy to see.
as RaceM suggested i dont see any burrs or buildup where he suggested.
really appreciate yalls help.
How do i go about polishing the chambers?
regards
Mike

If those deep reamer marks are also in the chambers, there is not a whole lot you can do about it.

Polishing them completely out would enlarge the chambers too much.

You could start out with 600 grit black emery paper wrapped around a slotted dowel rod and polish them some.

Just use oil on the paper to keep it from loading up with cuttings, and run it in & out until it knocks the bigger microscopic burs off.

Nice info

hello
the chambers are very smooth looking not having the reamer marks like in the picture at the chamber throat.
i dont believe i could get a pic of the area i described but its more like buildup than ream marks.
will give it a go and take my time and be very careful.
hopefully i can with your help get it to eject properly. will let you all know how it goes.
again thanks.

If you think there is build-up, take the guy at the gunshows advice.

Use powder solvent, a bronze bore brush, and an electric drill to clean each chamber.
I'd sure do that first just to make sure it isn't powder fouling, before I attempted any polishing with emery paper.

You could also wrap some 0000 grade (Super-Fine) steel wool around the bronze bore brush.
It may well help polish the chambers enough to ease extraction.
At any rate, it can't hurt the cylinder.

Walmart sporting goods department should have Hoppes #9 Powder Solvent.

You need some anyway to your clean guns!!

results

Hello all
RCmodel i followed your instructions with the steel wool and also polished up the cylinder w/six hundred sand paper with wooden dowel then yesterday took
it out for test drive. tried hornady and cci and results the same with both.
the problem is now solved with the brass coming right out like my S and W pre model ten.
I really like shooting the 22 MAGNUM.
much appreciation for taking the time to help me out. :)
the gun groups pretty good but a little low. i will adjust the rear sights next time out.
take care
Mike
