I am new to reloading. Certainly much to learn and this seems like a great place to pick up vast amounts of information. I purchased a Hornady LNL press with dies and shell plates for .45 ACP and 9mm. For starters, I purchased 230gn FMJ bullets for the .45 and 115gn FMJ for the 9mm. Also purchased new shell casings for both. I use the Lyman 49th edition reloading handbook.
The first load was the .45. No real issues as the book lists the ingredients for this setup. As we all know, powder is hard to find. (thanks Mr. Obvious) I was able to get some Bullseye at a local gun show. Since there are not many options, I will use this powder for both loads.
The first issue came up because when I moved on to loading the 9mm, there was no exact setup in the Lyman handbook. I used the powder load recommended for the 115gn bullet. Dummy bullets cycled fine. The reality of reloading is that cast bullets are the way to go. It’s not cost effective to shoot paper with FMJ bullets. For this reason, I purchased 115gn, 9mm Lugar .356 diameter cast bullets from Standard Bullet Company.
Now the problem. I use XD’s from Springfield Arms. The XD9 has a very short chamber. (haven’t checked the .45 as I have no cast bullets for it.) If I use the COL setup that was used for the FMJ’s, the bullet jams on the rifling in the barrel. I can shorten the length to about 1.08” and it dummy cycles just fine. When reading the manual, it states that the 9mm is very sensitive to seating depth. So I get confused. I want to go to cast bullets for both the 9mm and the .45 ACP. I will use 115gn for the 9 and 230gn for the .45.
Questions:
What is the correct setup for each using cast bullets and Bullseye powder?
Powder weight, seating depth?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give this greenhorn.
