Hi guys-

I am working at pulling together what I need to cast bullets for 475 Linebaugh target rounds.

The load is 9 gr Titegroup at about 875-900 fps in a BFR Revolver. This has worked well for me, but the 325gr bullets are expensive.

Lee makes a two cavity mold (C475-325-RF) that seems to fit the bill, however, the rest of the 475 bits are not so easy to find.

Lee does not offer a sizing die in 475, except by special order. I understand that I need to install gas checks as the bullets go through a sizer.

Questions:
  • For this load, do I need to size and add a gas check?
  • Can I use Alox or Rooster lube for these bullets?
  • Is there an better way to achieve economical bullets for this cartridge?
Thanks!

Bob

You don't need gas checks on 875 - 900 FPS target loads.
Gas checks are only needed on Magnum level hot loads where leading becomes an issue.
I don't believe the Lee push through die will seat gas checks anyway.

Whether you need to size or not depends entirely one what diameter the cast bullets drop out of the mold at.
Diameter can be affected by the alloy used, mold cavity tolerances, etc.
The only way to tell if you have to size them is cast some from your alloy and measure them.

Yes.

Not exactly cheap compared to 9mm bullets or something, but it takes a lot of lead to make bullets that big.
