I like using CCI 22 CB-Long for suburban critter control.

Are there any gunsmiths modifying semi-auto rifles to function reliably with this ammo?

Not that I'm aware of.

The +/-30 ft/lb energy just isn't enough to operate a semi-auto action, no matter what you do to it.

I guess I need to shop for a pump action 22.

I have seen one model of rifle that would shoot cb shorts reliably for about 50 rounds if it was really clean before you started shooting. High Standard Sports King Model A101 22 s,l,lr is the rifle. See them occasionally for around a hundred dollars locally.
