CBS News in Ammo Shortage

The story starts out talking about shortages in Alaska and then mentions the lower 48. Seems the shortage is much worse in Alaska, several calibers were mentioned including "300-, .303- and .243-caliber shells" as well as .22 "shells".

Then the article then mentions the lower 48 states and gives an fairly accurate account of what is causing the shortage. It even dispels rumors of the government buying up all the ammo as not true and that government purchases have actually gone down over the years.

It also mentions gun and ammo sales have been rising since the 2008 election fears and Newtown 2012 all contributing to the shortage. Then goes on to give other explanations mentioning rising material costs and concerns os "possible over-investment during a market bubble".

It goes on to mention and links to an American Rifleman article that explains the shortage. http://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/why-weve-had-ammunition-shortage

I didn't see any mention of people reselling ammo online for profit, but I guess they didn't want to contribute to the problem or give people ideas of doing the same. Overall a straight honest assessment of the ammo shortage from a major mainstream media outlet.

""Two years ago, when I was buying ammunition, I could buy .22 by the pallet-load," Jonathan Southwick with Ammo Inc., of Otsego, Michigan, lamented to CBS station WWMT-TV, "and now they're putting restrictions on how much you can get and how you get that ammo."

Looks like CBS is a day late and a dollar short on ammo shortage coverage. But then again major news media dont care much about the gun industry till something bad happens.
I think this part of the article is at least somewhat flawed:
"But the article also pointed to more mundane economic reasons behind the diminished ammunition stockpiles. Those include the rising cost of raw materials..."
Steve Hornady said himself that if customers are seeing a rise in price then it isn't due in part to a raise in manufacturer prices.

The US "ammo shortage" 2014.....

Youtube video channel personality TheYankeeMarshal did a recent video about the "ammo shortage" issue.
In short, TYM says the problem is caused mostly by;
Hoarders & people panic buying because they want to be ready for any new gun laws or bans. This is highly unrealistic due in part to the powerful, active NRA, ILA, NSSF, etc political actions.
People who want to buy up & re-sell ammunition. These carpet-baggers & bottom feeders do not care about 2A issues, gun laws, bans or anything other than buying all the supply up so they can gouge shooters/gun owners later.

These subjects have been discussed in gun forums often(since 2008-2012).
TYM made another good point that major companies like Winchester, Federal, CorBon, Black Hills, Hornady are not going to spend $$$ to hire-train staff, buy material & build new plants if they can sustain the large demands/high prices.

Start another run on what is available and make it even harder.... Great....

Do you really think people who otherwise wouldn't be buying ammo...over the past 1.5 years...will go out and buy a bunc because CBS just now made them aware that a shortage happened?

Actually, my rule of thumb is that when mainstream media finally discovers a trend or social movement, that means said movement is nearly played out. This could be good news for us.

LGS Memorial Day sale American Eagle .45 Acp fmj $18.99 Blazer brass $19.99 first time in a couple of years I've seen .45acp below $20.00 so I'm buying. Ammo shortage? not this weekend, I hope. ;)

That's mostly NBC.

Dan Rather.

Actually the article doesn't seem to get anything wrong which for CBS is amazing considering they're talking about something related to firearms. They never get it all right when it comes to guns. Let's not forget they were responsible (along with the NYT) for the insane gun poll where supposedly 90% of Americans backed new gun laws. According to CBS over 50% of people want to ban all semi-auto guns and a whopping 80% want a gun sale database for the whole country. Yeah right. With numbers like that they would amend the constitution in a heartbeat. I can just imagine their questions i.e. "Would you like to see a national gun sales database or more kids being shot in schools?" They aren't quite that blatant but they are pretty bad in the way they frame questions in their so called "polls". No way we wouldn't see incredible new gun laws with numbers like that. It was pure propaganda on their part.

The article is correct. The shortage was caused by gun owners paranoid about future prospects of more gun control. Assuming republicans put forward another unelectable candidate next presidential election will be no different.

Except without Sandy Hook and the political response to that, the panic would not have happened.
