When Dan Wesson announced the DWX late last year I sold some guns to fund the purchase of it. While I was sitting on that money waiting for it to be released Wilson Combat released the EDC X9S, which is what I would have designed if I was designing a carry gun for myself. I need to pocket carry as carrying IWB or OWB bothers my back, so I need something small enough for that. While I have striker guns I shoot well, I shoot 1911's significantly better. (I know the EDC's are not true 1911's, but it's close enough for me.) Living in the Chicago area where attacks by multiple thugs are not uncommon, capacity matters, so while I'd prefer 12 or more rounds, I'm good with 10+1. Finally and most importantly reliability is a must.
I've been watching for a deal, and Hyatt Gun Store in North Carolina had a used one which they got through an estate sale for $400 less than a new one. They listed it being in very good condition with a little wear from being shot, and after talking to them about the condition and who the previous owner was I ordered it. It came in today. I see no wear on it, and it looks like a new gun. I stopped at a range this afternoon and put 200 rounds through it, including 124 grain HST, 124 HST +P, my reloads (124 grain FN from RMR) and some 115 grain Wolf ammo. I had no malfunctions and it shot as well and as accurately as I thought it would. I put rear night sights on it and am waiting for Wilson Combat to release a front night sight for it, which is coming soon.
I took some pictures next to my Hellcat with the 11 round magazine installed, and the size difference is negligible. In the second picture I'm holding the Hellcat above the EDC. It's a little heavier than the Hellcat, but I don't notice the difference pocket carrying.
I did think long and hard about carrying a gun that cost over $2000. I understand the risk of havng it confiscated if I ever have to use it, but I'm from the school of thought that if that were to occur and I was able to protect myself because I carried the best available gun for me, it's a small price to pay. Add the fact that my youngest son is with me most of the time and I'm also protecting him, the decision was easy. My gun club is closed due to the shut down (it's outdoors, but indoor ranges are allowed the be open. You have to love Illinois.) and I'll wait the 2 to 3 weeks until it reopens to put more rounds through it.
