CC when you're not sure about your coworkers

I work in a small office, wearing office casual every day. My shirt is generally tucked in, and I don't need to wear a jacket. Honestly, my coworkers might think it odd if I did... Mostly I spend all day in my cubicle, but occasionally need to go offsite for meetings and such, sometimes crossing state lines as I go (I'm on the border of two states, live in one, work in the other). My permit is honored by both states, but I *think* my employers might have a problem with it if I carried at work. I was considering some manner of derringer or Kel-Tec, perhaps in a bellyband, ankle holster, or pocket holster, but my real question is this:

I don't feel comfortable going unarmed, even in my cubicle. I don't work in a *bad* part of town, but it's not the greatest, either. Plus if I have to stop for gas or groceries on the way home, then I AM in a bad part of town. Does the mild possibility of losing my job if discovered outweigh the mild possibility of losing my life? :(

I haven't asked anybody straight up, but I have worked for this company for over a year and a half, and I'm not entirely sure folks would be too happy with me for carrying. It's not legally prohibited, there are no posted signs, and nothing in the handbook about legal CC. I'm not sure it's a can of worms I want to open unless I really need to.

Comments? Thoughts? Snide remarks?

What about a messenger bag? You can have your pistol within reach, but it looks totally professional. They make several "tactical" ones that have a built in gun pocket that will comfortably hold a full sized .45.

Thats a real personal decision and you are the only one who can make it. If it was me I'd find a very deep concealment rig and carry it without saying anything. If you get caught and in trouble explain that you didn't see it in the manual and won't do it again.

I guess I would go for it, since it isn't expressly prohibited. Just keep it well concealed and don't let anyone know about it. Telling your coworkers/boss probably isn't going to do anything except maybe make someone uncomfortable, or have them tell you not to. If something changes and for whatever reason it becomes expressly prohibited, then that will have to change your strategy.

I'm liking the messenger bag idea for now... that would allow me to carry my big gun NOW as opposed to waiting until I have the $$$ for a mouse gun.

Bratch, you're a good man. Out of curiousity, does the old maxim "It's better to ask forgiveness than permission" apply very well to guns? People get so testy about such things...

If it is not in the handbook and there are no signs, they probably would not have grounds to fire you, at least not that you couldn't contest. Don't say anything, even hints, and be very discreet.

Lookout Mountain - are you in TN? If so, you are in a relatively gun-friendly state, but your situation is dependent on the individuals there, and possibly corporate policy mandated by folks in less friendly climes.

I have had a pistol in my desk drawer for a long time now. Recently I have rethought my situation after the event at the university in Alabama where the lady stood up in a meeting and, without any warning, drew a pistol and started shooting. Now I am more likely to have a smaller one in my pocket (J-frame) where it is immediately available rather than in my office.

This situation is the very definition of the saying "Concealed means concealed." Keep your weapon concealed and say nothing to anyone else about it. And if your co-workers are really that sketchy, do you really want to work there? Perhaps I am misunderstanding the context of your thread title.

If there's nothing in the manual at work and you don't work somewhere that carry is prohibited by state law, I'd go the "don't ask, don't tell" route. It's better to beg forgieness than ask permission and asking is more than likely going to get you told that you can't carry plus have the effect of the higher-ups giving you extra scrutiny.

I'd go with a .38 J-frame or small .380 in a pocket, and just keep it quiet. If you never have to defend yourself with it there is no reason anyone needs to know about it.

You might consider a product similar to the Galco Hidden Agenda (link). It would allow you to carry in a messenger bag or whatever you want to carry to the office, but allow you to move the gun discreetly to your desk drawer, etc if you felt the need.

True, though in my case, getting caught would result in a felony. :fire:

So I don't do it.

If I had the option, I'd go with a smart carry personally. Heck, I've thought about carrying pepper or bear spray in that manner while at work.

Each method has it's downsides. With a smart carry, you are limited to somewhat smaller guns. But with a messenger bag, you've got the same downsides as any other off-body carry. Namely, the gun may not be under your direct control and/or secured at all times.

In my mind,my need/right to protect myself "trumps" any company policy.I can/will get another job, can't replace my life. Not hard at all to conceal most any pistol with a good iwb/pocket holster.Keep it concealed, tell NO one and carry away!!!!

What they don't know won't hurt them, just keep it concealed and don't tell anyone. You said there's no written policy against it.

I agree, jsut keep it concealed. If you'll choose your every day carry gun, think about something that you may conceal easiliy in your pocket. Something like Micro Desert Eagle, Kel tech might be the solution for you.
In your pocket, I am pretty sure you'll forget the existence. It will be always with you.
Just try to think on the other way, are you talking about to content of your pockets to your colleagues? No..!! So, just get a pocket gun, forget the existence and be safe..

If there's no company policy prohibiting guns, get yourself a P3AT and stick it in your pocket. You'll forget it's there, it's so small, light and thin. Also, keep mum about it. An anti-gun co-worker won't make a fuss if they don't know you have the gun. A low profile is advised.

Not trying to rain on your parade, but if you go the messenger bag route, then - unless you have a locking drawer that you & only you can open - anywhere you go, including the john, you've gotta take that bag with you. A woman carries her purse everywhere; a man does not carry his bag everywhere unless there's something in it. The first time or two coworkers may think you odd; after that they might catch on "something's in that bag."

Flip side, you cannot leave your gun unsecured in your cubicle if other coworkers have access to it. All it takes is you going for a coffee/bathroom/photocopier run and your neighbor across the way decide to reach in your drawer for some more paperclips and :what:. Just sayin'...

I ask my boss once if I could CC at work. He answered: You probably shouldn't but then I have one in my office that's been there for 20 years.

Uh, is that a yes or a no? So now I carry it sometimes and sometimes I lock it in the car. I figure by doing this at least I'm getting it right part of the time.
:D

get a pocket gun (LCP/P3AT/MDE/TCP/DB) and be done with it. switch back to your larger gun once you leave work.

thankfully, carrying is encouraged at my office :D

I live in TN but live in West TN. I saw you're close to Chattanooga. I carry a snub hammerless airweight in a quality ankle holster in an office environment or when I go to work type conferences. No one knows and that is the way I keep it. If I go to a conference and leave it late at night and have to walk a parking lot I just go into the bathroom and go in a stall and take the snub out of the holster and put it in my pocket so I can get to it faster.

Best bet is to just do it without alerting anyone. It raises less eyebrows. You can easily fit a Ruger LCP, Kel-tec or a Diamondback in your pants pocket.

I would carry and not ask or let anyone know. I would assume carry on the body to make sure the gun is always on you and can't accidentally be discovered. I would look at deep concealment options or a tuckable IWB holster.

I'd go with a 5.11 holster shirt.

Gun choice would be a Kahr P-9/P-40, or a Glock 26. I'd prefer these over a J-frame, but that's also a viable choice.

We're (by policy) not allowed to have firearms at work or in company vehicles. Recently one of our production facilities was shut down but a small maintenance shop still operates out of that location, very bad part of town (we've been broken into 10+ times in the last 12 months). Monday mornings, you can expect to see a the crews in the shop before heading to the jobs (approx 16 people), any other time of the week you can expect to see at most 4 people and often times only 1 person in there. More often that not, I am that one person. I carry to work daily. If others are at the office, I leave it in my truck. When everyone else leaves, my M&P40c goes in my IWB and stay's there the rest of the day. In weather like we have now, I'm in a sweatshirt all day so concealing is easy. As the summer comes and I'm in a t-shirt, I'll probaby still carry, but it may have to be my Mustang instead. I've talked with my boss, and his boss (the 3rd gen owner) and both have guns in their vehicles as well, both said that they don't blame me. They both said that they can't "okay" me to carry, but will happily turn their head on the subject. The way I see it, going home each night is more important that any job will ever be. I was looking for a job when I found this one, right?
