My Son gave me 800 CCI 550 primers to use with my 9MM reloads. I plan on using Unique powder and 115gr RN bullets. Can I use these as a subsitute for CCI 500 primers without any problems. Thanks

Yes, you can use magnum primers in place of regular pistol primers. If you use low power target loads that barely make PF, then you're probably OK. If you use full power loads or if you have never chono-ed your loads and are unsure how to classify them, then it is best to work up the load again from the "starting load".

To answer ya question do this , prime a case with a 500 go outside chamber the primed case ,insert a new #2 pencil into the barrel ,point it up & drop the hammer.

Do the same with the 550.

Safety apperal as necassary !!

Next question.

I realize the response above is is sorta crazy, but until ya do this ya really can`t put the difference into respective !

The 9mm is a hi pressure round most(stock) pistols take a load close to max to operate reliably & so my answer is NO !! do as rfwobbly suggests go to starting loads & even then "starting" loads may do what your looking for

The only problem I see is the powder you're using and the magnum primer. Like 2400 Unique does not play well with magnum primers. Sometimes the magnum primers will cause Unique to burn erratically and velocities will fluctuate.

Normally I would say you can substitute CCI550 primers for CCI500 primers in the 9mm but in this case because of Unique I would load a small test batch and see if you can live with the results. Do you load any other calibers with a different powder? If so that might be a better choice.

I interchanged primers once, and won't do it again. Back when we had shortages I was unable to locate 250's and 550's, so I used 200's and 500's and the result was unburned and still burning powder blowing back in my face. But I load exclusively with slow burning powders for both handgun and rifle loads. I don't know how your swap will pan out.
