I need a primer on primers

OK. I normally use CCI 500 primers for reloading my Glock 17.

Can I confidently use CCI 550 and/or if so does that necessitate a change in powder grains.

What about other brands...Remington, Winchester, etc.

The same question regarding large rifle primers vs large magnum primers.

In general, magnum primers have thicker cups in addition to having a hotter flame. If you were to substitute them into an already near maximum load, you should reduce the powder charge by 5% or so.

Some powders react to magnum primers by reducing ballistic consistancy and accuracy suffers.

Because of the thicker cup, you may also see misfires in guns with weak firing pin impact.

That said, years ago I came into a really good deal on 10 bricks of CCI 550 primers. I've used them with mild loads that certainly don't require a magnum primer, and no problems so far.

The #1 rule in handloading, "Anytime you change a component you must reduce your charge and work back up." This includes primers, primer brands and even lot numbers. This warning is clearly printed in every loading manual.

Ditto on the last two posts. Be safe, have fun.

That said, if it is a light to medium load, it is OK to change brands while using the same primer. (ie.- CCI small pistol/Win small pistol etc.) When you are at 90% max and up you really need to back off a hair and work it back up.

I strongly agree with ants here, use mag primers only when called for until you get a lot more experience.
