In threads like this you'll get a ton of opinions. Take the information and make of it what you will to determine what's best for you. Body type, mode of dress/climate, training level, and daily activities will largely influence your eventual decision. I personally prefer autos, but that is because I shoot them better. I shoot them better because I prefer them and have more experience with them. That doesn't mean the same will work for you. Seek information as you are doing here. Try different models at a range if you can. Most importantly, have fun in the search!

Best of luck.

I dunno, I'm probably putting too much into these debates in my head.

Yep, go to a gun store and see what fits your hands and in your pockets. Myself, I prefer autos and 40cal or bigger myself. I'm a little bigger than you describe at 6'2" and 220, but I don't think you'll have any issues with the right gun/holster combo.

Thanks guys.

I'm starting to really lean towards a KelTec in 9mm as both fit my budget a lot better than a whole knew "weapons platform" firing ammo at least as expensive as my .45 ACP.

AJM,

Since you already have a RIA .45, why not a smaller 1911? I carry a Kimber Ultra Carry II, it is small, light and conceals well IWB without the need for a large cover garment.

If you are concerned about ammo prices the Kahr 9mm looks good, but I have not owned/shot one.

My 2 pennies.

Hey man, small world! How's things?

Eh, it's a distant consideration but I think I want something smaller. A friend has that same pistol and I like it but to me it seems somewhere between a fullsize and a truly small gun.
That and .45 ammo is eating me alive to the point where I almost have stopped shooting it. 9mm at least gives me the option of buying FMJ to go plinking with the carry piece.

I'm kind of a KelTec man without ever having had one. Dad's had a P32 for years now and loves it. Nice little gun but the hole in the end is a bit small for my tastes...

I have owned almost all of the kel tec pistols at one point or another and each have their drawbacks and advantages.

P11- incredibly small package for 12 rounds of 9mm, LONG trigger pull, even when compared to a DA revolver, the trigger is 8.5lbs. from the factory, but the length makes it feel heavier to me, fits my hand perfectly

PF9 - the only KT pistol I have not owned, held one and was really impressed with the size and trigger improvement over the P11, this is an ideal compromise IMO

P32/P3AT - basically the same gun, with the .32 version you are limited to FMJ only unless you use modified magazines

I still carry a SW 642 90% of the time. The cylinder is bulkier than a semi-auto, but the frame and barrel are as thin as the .32. A good pocket holster will break up the outline and make it carry much better.

Spare ammo is easily carried in a Speedstrip. They aren't much faster than loading single rounds, but it keeps the ammo all together.

The biggest advantage to the revolver in my opinion is that it will work upside down, stuck up someone's nose, shooting out of a pocket, etc. A semi-auto is more likely to malfunction when shot from a less conventional position. If someone grabs a revolver's cylinder, theoretically they could prevent the cylinder from turning and thus tying up the gun, but it takes very strong hands to do this and I plan to be kicking and otherwise distracting my attacker as much as possible if they're that close.

I routinely carry a Kimber Ultra Carry II, a 3" .45 ACP in my pocket in a Sam Andrews www.andrewsleather.com pocket holster. It is almost exactly the same size as a snubby. However you cannot wear tight trousers and expect to conceal very well.

Glock 26 in a CTAC. You'll have 11 rounds of 9mm on tap in a small, light, controllable, reliable gun.

Here you can see the size difference compared to a Glock 17.

The holster is an IWB from CompTAC called a CTAC.

I've had mine for a little over a year and a half. Never any problems. The only changes I've made are swapping in a factory 3½ lb connector and Glockmeister spring to clean up the trigger. Now it has a light trigger with a consistent pull weight all the way through.

This carry setup is really one that you can wear for a few weeks and then stop noticing. It's that comfortable!

Hey man, another truck owner from the past.

I can't shoot Glocks for ****. I like their reliability and availability (seen the price on a lightly used Glock 17 or 19 lately?) but for the life of me the grip won't let me be comfortable shooting them.

Im also vote for Glock 26 - in a FIST IWB Kydex...

or a P3AT in a Galco horsehide pocket...

1911s for the range!
