I frequently ride motorcycles. Any suggestions on a lock box for motorcycles? I live outside the city and literally can't get to town without going through a school zone, during which time the firearm must be locked in a box.

What state are you in?

AFAIK, in most states the 1000 foot "no guns" school zone rule doesn't apply to CCW holders.

According to my ccw instructor firearms must be in a lock box while transiting school zones, although I can't find it in the law books anywhere. Any other Kansas permit holders out there that can clear this up?

I believe that CCW holders are exmpted under federal law.
Only if the issuance of the permit includes a background check.

18 USC 922(q)(2)

(2)(A) It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to

possess a firearm that has moved in or that otherwise affects

interstate or foreign commerce at a place that the individual

knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.

(B) Subparagraph (A) does not apply to the possession of a

firearm -
(i) on private property not part of school grounds;

(ii) if the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do

so by the State in which the school zone is located or a

political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or

political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtains

such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or

political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified

under law to receive the license;

We had that silly law here in VA until a couple years ago. It pretty much made carry in any town or city illegal. They finally wisened up, even making CC legal on school grounds so long as you are inside your vehicle and just out in the parking lot.

I wonder if that applies to bikes though.

Sort of a tangent here, but I'm looking for a good holster for carry on a bike. What do you use at the moment? Or do you just dump the gun+holster in a bag?

Also after good concealment, and I figure a good shoulder holster'd be the answer to both.

My P3AT fits in my windshield bag. I have found that my new shoulder holster is the best way carry on a bike (for me that is). I also added a cruise control module so if I have to draw on someone while riding I can lock the cruise control and fire. :) JUST KIDDING!!
The main reason I don't carry on the waist anymore is that one day I was riding down the road and my shirt had inched its way up from the wind and my 9mm was then out in plain view. I didn't notice until I stopped at a light and another guy I was riding with told me.

In Memphis I see guys on sport-bikes on the interstate all the time with a pistol in a IWB and their shirt flapping behind them.

I also ride all the time with a IWB holster and a long shirt and leather vest. Doesn't show as far as I can tell. Also, this is one of those times when being a lefty pays big......

Back when I was riding (sportbikes), I did the IWB thing as well, but I also wore leathers when I rode. If it was a particularly hot day and I didn't wear them I usually ankle carried.

I did some quick digging and it looks like Kansas' laws are very similar to Colorado on CCW and schools.

Here, carrying is forbidden INSIDE a school.

You can have it locked safely in your vehicle in a school parking lot.

I'd read the Kansas CCW bill if I were you. It's usually pretty much common sense here in CO.

No government buildings, no schools, no private institutions that openly prohibit it or have metal scanning devices/guards posted.

I've never heard of anyplace that stipulates "school zones". Thats a pretty broad range in any city. I could easily drive from my house to work and encounter four or five school zones, one of which I live in.

The KS CCW is new, I'd definitely look up your bill and call your sheriff's dept. if there is any question.

depends on what kind of gear you where but something light like a P3-AT can be stuffed basically anywhere... I personally wouldn't want it anywhere near my spine in case of a getoff, but most jackets have a pocket that the keltec would fit in.

On my bike I wear a fanny pack aka belly bag and my wife rides on the back of our bike and carries her 9mm in a belly bag also. We travel all over the country and have never had a problem except we don't go into California or Canada. Living in Oregon we have to travel a few extra miles to go to some of our favorite places in the southwest in order to avoid California but all in all we feel it's worth it. No hassles. We get stopped once in a while (speeding) and the officer never seems to have any problems with our "personal baggage" and seldom even asks for the CCW permits. Furthermore, I feel that we have "dodged the bullet" on some ninety plus mile per hour tickets because we were packing and appeared to be polite and respectful of the officer(s).

I keep mine in the topcase on my K1200LT. Doesn't help you much though.

I stopped carrying on me when riding after a low speed crash last year. Scratched the gun up a bit, tore the retention strap on the holster, and left a good sized bruise on my hip.

There are several leather vest & jackets designed for handgun concealment .
I have a vest, but luckily I live in AZ now & I can open carry on the bike
