CCW Dilemma: 1911 vs XD45

The lightweight of the scandium pistols makes it a worthy carry pistol.

I agree with you in terms of weight, but cripes! I shot a scandium .357, and it was the most unpleasant gun I have ever shot. I am not particularly recoil sensitive, but that little thing just plain hurt to shoot.

I carry th XD45 13+1 4in service model and I LOVE it, sometimes you just have to ensure that the clothes you wear will conceal it. However like others have said I belive you should carry what feels good and works for you. Also like others have said if you are worried about number or rounds available carry spare mags.

I would look into the S&W 1911 scandium commander. The 1911 will be easier to conceal due to the single stack grip and overall thiness of the pistol.

I would second that. I have one and it is definitely worth considering.

My preference however is my XD45 Compact. Though it is thicker than a 1911, I carry mine with ease in a IWB holster. It has a shorter grip than the full size XD45 so it is easier to conceal, a 4" barrel and holds 10 +1 rounds vs the PD's 8 +1. No manual safeties to worry about, light weight, and it comes with a standard length 13 round magazine that is fitted with a sleeve that basically allows you to convert the gun into a full size XD45.

I carry mine with the 10 round magazine in the gun. At night, I stick the 13 rounder in it for house duty.

I suppose I'm the wrong person to offer an answer to your capacity question ... so I won't.

I carry a 7+1 capacity .45 ACP pistol everyday as my issued weapon, while performing my normal duties, and I have yet to be concerned about the capacity of the 7-round magazines.

I used to carry higher capacity 9mm and .40 S&W pistols, too.

For that matter, I routinely carry one or another 5-shot S&W J-frame as an off-duty weapon.

I do, however, do a bit of training with all of my weapons.

It's just a handgun.

I tend to emphasize user knowledge and skill above caliber and capacity, but that's just me ...

I do agree with many instructors who feel that lawful carry of 'cocked & locked' 1911-style weapons requires some increased awareness and skill levels of the user.

Luck to you.

Make the best informed choice you can ... for your anticipated needs and circumstances.

5'9" and I range from 140-160lbs. No problem concealing my 4" XD45.

I really, really, really wanted to carry a 1911, but when it came time for me to pick a .45 I went with the XD. I've been carrying an XD9, then XD40SC for so long that I'm just plain used to guns that don't require safeties to swipe off.
