CCW for Big Guys...Reccomendations?

I'm also quite overweight. Usually toss a P3AT in a pocket for daily carry, if I'm not going to work I carry an officer-sized 1911 in a desantis cozy partner holster. On retrospect, a milt sparks vm2 or crossbreed would be a better choice. I hold it up with a 5.11 belt (they wear out after about six months) and carry around 4 o'clock. In the winter and spring a light sweater covers very well, though in the summer you either need to do the untucked button-down look (with an undershirt as a sweat guard) or go without the larger pistol.

Do you carry the HK tilted in the SOB? Just wondering as that seems the only way that it would be comfortable/accessible/concealable

Also, doesn't that tend to make your pants want to fall? Seems like that would be a lot of weight

Thanks

Yes, I do tilt the HK, even though my holster isn't designed for it. The tilt makes the draw smoother and easier, and it turns the weapon just right so that it looses itself is the cavity of the small of your back.

It is a lot of weight back there, so make sure you have a good belt, or you'll lose your pants when you jog to the car. LOL :)

6' even 330lb
Comptac C-Tac gets a lot of carry with XD 5" .45 & one for 1911.
Ruger LCP & SP101 get a lot of pocket carry. Don Hume pocket holsters

The iwb holsters like the c-tac and similar from other makes are nice since the cant can be adjusted by having one clip high/lower than the other. Tip is slightly forward, get the belt good and tight and you're good to go.

I will say that several were uncomfortable at first, but I'm fat a lot of things are uncomfortable its my own fault lol. What I'm trying to say is once I got a setup that didn't bite or cause sharp pains I just gave it time and got comfortable. Now I rarely notice the little poke in the side that was initially uncomfortable.

I do wear mostly square bottom shirts untucked. If I had to tuck over one it would probably be a different story.

Since I'm bulgy around the middle a slight lump here and there goes mostly unnoticed anyhow lol. 3" S&W 629 leather owb goes perfect under a hawaiian shirt!

You are not alone

I'M 6'2' and 300plus but my pocket is no bigger than tiny tim. lcp fits the best, bond arms ck2 in45/410 is nice but a little heavy(ankle holster is nice for driving) and my sp101 357 is nice behind the back.size doesn't help conceal. a deck chair can be found no matter how big the boat is.

5'10" 250lbs

If my Kimber Ultra Carry shot like a Glock I'd be upset :)

OWB on my hip, I also carry a Ruger Security Six 2 3/4 barrel sometimes.

Just wear a nice button up shirt untucked with no problem.

to get the concealment of a iwb with a owb use a pancake holster from unkle mike and center it with the small of your back im 6' 265lbs and i carry like described its confortable in the truck while hunting shoot even play sports with it like that

A good friend, fellow paratrooper veteran, lodge brother, and shooting buddy was 5'10" and 252 lbs before he "got buff" and went down to 190 lbs. At his largest, his CCW was a 2 3/4 inch barreled Ruger Service Six .357 Mag carried in either shoulder holster (in cooler weather) or in a cross-draw holster (with NFL jersey type t-shirt in warm weather) or in a Nemesis holster in the large cargo pocket of his shorts (in really warm weather). None of us could ever tell that he was carrying, and we certainly looked!! (When we all get together for our twice-a-month mini-reunions we consciously look at each other and advise each other if we think one of us is "printing.")

It may sound sacreligious, but why not get a nice, well-made .380 or small 9mm? See Gun Tests for their recommendation. You won't take out any elephants with it, but inside self defense range, .380 and 9mm do the job.

"When you need it, a .22 in your pocket beats a .45 in your truck."

The "pancake" type holsters that conform to your waist are less conspicuous, and a rounded grip; revolvers, or no finger rest on a magazine will help too.

6"4 and (most days) just under 300lbs here. I find that 4 o'clock carry IWB works best for me. A good holster and belt are a must when trying to carry a big gun all day. IWB is very doable if you buy your pants 1 size large. That being said...even with an un-tucked tshirt I am comfortable carrying everything from a 2.75" ruger security six .357 to a SIG P220. When I need to tuck in my shirt I switch to a S&W J frame or Kel-tec PF-9, again both IWB. If I wear a suit coat, I can even wear my S&W 28-2 in a simplyrugged sourdough pancake holster.

The benefit to being big is that you can conceal bigger guns. I'm 6'4" and 315 lbs. I wear my shirt tails out a lot (and almost always wear a t-shirt underneath). My shirt tails also always hang below the tops of my pockets. So I carry mostly on my belt in highride holsters. I carry/have carried a Sig P220R Carry, Colt Commander, Glock 30 in Galco Fletches and such. I routinely carry a Ruger SP101 in a Galco paddle holster. I carry my CZ75 Compact in an Uncle Mikes high ride nylon holster. And carry my CZ83 in an Uncle Mikes IWB holster - but I wear it like a pocket-liner and carry my gun that way with the butt sticking out. All of these conceal nicely under my shirts.

If I'm formal enough to wear my shirt tails tucked in, I'm usually not carrying at all.

Springfield/Colt 1911 - these concealed well also but had reliability issues with both

Most 1911 reliabilty issues can be solved with properly tuning the extractor (or replacing a bad extractor) and good magazines, like Wilson 47D's. Another thing to look at is ammo choices.

I'm a big guy and I CCW a full size 1911 in a VMII, no problem.

I am 4'22", and 185 lbs, I carry a Kimber Ultra CDPII, in a Fobus holster, with my coat on it is pretty concealed, and if not, oh well Ohio is an open carry state:neener:, so either way all is well, and maybe if the wrong person sees it, then they won't try anything

I carried a custom 1911 .45 ACP in a Bianchi 7L (strongside) on duty and off for over 30 years. Sometimes going over 28 hours straight and the only way I could tell that it was there was to press my elbow against it. Since we now stress double action only, I now carry a Para 1911 7-45 LDA in a Bianchi X-15 shoulder holster. In the woods (we have a lot of black bears) I carry a .357 4" S&W 686 Plus with hot jacketed soft points (in the X-15. Sometimes I also carry a M&P .40 in a kydex IWB at 9 oclock. I also always carry two extra mags or speed loaders. I can do the plate rack (8" steel plates at 30') in under 3 seconds. Try that with a small light weight handgun. Don't buy a handgun to complement the way you dress, but dress to complement with what you carry. All my handguns also have Crimson Trace laser grips. A good Custom gunsmith can make any handgun MUCH better.

Im 6'2 250 and I have to recommend a Springfield MC Operator for a carry 1911. being big it will be no problem to conceal it and it is as every bit as reliable as my XD. Plus you will likely have the coolest looking carry gun around...

6'-6" and 320 lbs. I've only seen one other mention, but I carry a Glock 27 in an ankle holster. Most of the time I forget that I'm even carrying. You never have to worry if your shirt or coat is riding up and revealing your weapon and no one ever looks at your feet. During the summer, I drop it in the cargo pocket of my camo shorts. The camo pattern helps to break up the outline. I've tried just about every other type of carry rig, and either the rig itself or the clothes you have to wear just never feel right, then you are always fidgeting and adjusting. Ankle carry doesn't allow for super fast drawing, but if it's the difference between carrying or not, I'd rather be carrying.

6'4", 310 lbs, 54" chest, 42x34/36 pants.
I carry a fullsized 1911 IWB @ 3:30-4:00 in a lobo gunleather holster.
Usually I dont even notice its there... and neither does anyone else.
A good holster, belt, and properly fitting pants makes ALL the difference.

Glock 26 - IWB Galco holster . 5' 11" - 300 lbs. Slacks or jeans - collared shirt worn untucked. Never been made . I also carry an extra mag owb . no problem. I went the route of trying to make the gun fit me and there were too many short comings .

Springfield/Colt 1911 - these concealed well also but had reliability issues with both
Take either one of these guns and lightly polish the feed ramp and get quality magazines -- I like Shooting Stars. Carry in a good IWB (I make my own.) That's about the best advice I can give.
