I’m looking for my first CCW / general use planker in 9mm. I currently have a G17, which I really haven’t shot all that much so it’s not to late to change platforms. I wouldn’t mind a G19, but I’m really uneasy about the safety of the Glock and would prefer something with a manual safety. I know safety is in my hands and the rules of shooting, but accidents do happen and I would rather have a manual safety for if/when (Hopefully not :uhoh: )an accident happens and was thinking of something like a Sig 228. I would probably carry chamber loaded and hammer down, if this is even possible, so the gun is relatively safer than a Glock in my opinion. I would rent a few times to make sure the Sig or Glock worked for me. I just don’t feel 100% safe carrying a striker type gun.

Just wondering what you guys have to say:
Thanx,
Gavin

Glocks are as safe as you are. A good holster that covers the trigger gaurd and control of your own finger is all you need.

The Sig is a much better pistol imho. Yes, you can carry it with a round in the chamber and hammer down. Just use the decocker to lower the hammer. Not your thumb ala Jack Bauer.

The Sig and the Glock are both great guns though and whichever you decide to go with will serve you well.

Sig or Glock

In my department, all merit officers are issued Sig 229 in 357 SAO. The Jail Officers purchase their own department approved firearm if they choose to carry (not required). So, what does department approved mean? Sig or Glock or Berretta. 9mm or .357 Sig. Not a big choice, right? But IMHO, it means you can't go wrong with whatever you choose. I mean, as long as you are choosing a full combat size, try shooting em all and see what works for you. And don't forget to try to hit what your looking at when the sphincter slams shut, your palms run sweaty, and your eyes cross, cause that's all that counts. (If you can simulate THAT!) Otherwise, why carry at all?

+1 Springfield XD

Edited to add: I choose the XD over my GLOCK for carry because of the grip safety.

Comparing the Glock 19 vs. the P228, that would be one tough situation.

The Glock is lighter, slimmer, and more compact than the P228. Only gripe is (for me) the trigger pull and the grip angle. Some like the trigger, I personally dont. But I think for CCW carry wise, the Glock 19/23/32 is the perfect CCW piece.

The SIG P228. Its bigger, fatter, and heavier than the G19. But, its MUCH more satisfying shooting a SIG than a Glock. Some dont like the transition between the DA/SA and prefer Glock's consistent pull.

For strictly carry, I think the G19 is hard to beat. But my loyalty still goes towards the SIG.

I guess best to do is to flip a coin. Its a REALLY tough call.

I would rather have a manual safety...and was thinking of something like a Sig 228.

The 228 doesn't have a manual safety, just a de-cocker. The only safety advantage over the Glock in that respect is the longer, heavier trigger pull. You can install a NY1 or NY2 trigger spring in a Glock, making the pull weight the same or higher than a typical Sig, and thus theoretically "safer". The trigger travel remains the same, though, and the heavy Glock triggers don't agree with most people.

My only trigger related concern with the Glock is holstering, which requires great care. With the 228, you can index your thumb on the hammer as you holster the gun, and feel it moving if the trigger gets hung up on something and starts to pull.

The 228 is one of my favorites, but the Glock shoots and carries better for me.
