I will be going to Arkansas in August. What can the locals tell me about CCW? What is the good and bad?

I have my Texas CHL and Texas has a reciprocity agreement with Arkansas, I have checked on Packing.org and have some info already. Can some of you locals tell me something that may not be found on packing.org?

You should not have any problems. Anything specific you wanted to know? I have been stopped by a cop one time and I handed him my drivers license and CCW . He never mentioned it. Coarse I look really non - scary and he was a county cop. I've carried in Dallas once when I was down there.

Prior to coming to Texas, I was a resident of Arkansas and had a CCW there. You will find the laws are basically identical to Texas for CCW and you should have no trouble there at all.

I was born in Paragould. Most of my family is from either Paragould or Blythesville(sp?).

My Dad lives in a small town near Ft. Smith and he hasn't seen his grandson since he just began walking. My son is now 3.

I am also planning on getting in some fishing and doing some touristy things while we are there. Haven't decided where to fish yet. Last time we took a striper trip at Dardonelle(sp?).

Arkansas is one of the most beautiful and underrated states. Although it isn't for many years, it would be a great place to retire.

DWS1117, what small town near Fort Smith?

I grew up in a small town about 50 miles from Fort Smith, and I currently live just outside another small town about 18 miles north of Fort Smith.

Mulberry is right on I40 -- while you're here, take a day or so and tour the Ozarks. Mountain View, where I live, is a great place to visit. We have the Ozark Folk Center, music on the square, Blanchard Springs Caverns, and lots more.

One of the interesting details about the AR law is that you must announce to a private homewowner if you are carrying before you enter their home. At least I think that's what it said...I tested this out on a recent visit to a friend's farm.

Me: Hey Chris, Arkansas state law says I have to tell you I have a gun on me.

Chris: OK.

Yes, it really is that big of a deal! BTW, the weekend was later officially named the Kerosene and Moon Pie Adventure of 2005...

If you find yourself in NW AR send an e-mail and Ill show you a good place to shoot. Actually, a couple of good places.

*ahem*

Here in Central AR, well I gots me a Trailer on stilts housing a Library with some feller's name that used to reside in a big white house up north.

Now I don't go down that way. They don't allow guns in some areas anyway.
I ain't about to pay $5 for a cup of coffee either.

Now they spent ~ $600k on some high dollar surveillance cameras, spent another $35K on motorized bicycles for the po-po...them car windows still getting busted out, folks getting car-jacked, and I guess some crooks can't read, cause THEY have guns in areas down there - sign say you ain't supposed to. Victims must be wrong when they report ( finally ) the BG had a gun.

Now Duke...the dog from Bush's Beans, is gonna be here at Riverfest. Some folks commented about meeting Duke, seeing the Black Crows, Hank Williams Jr and who know whom else.

I last attended Riverfest when it was held elsewhere, no folks checking for guns and such.

So stay up in the north part of the state where it cooler, and a lot prettier. Fish, shoot, see the arts and crafts. Eat some great food.

Me...I wish the gangbangers would at least have the courtesy to use brass cased ammo. All they have been leaving around me is Blazer casings. Downright inconsiderate in my opinion.

Oh Goody, timed that just right...gunshots and the Firetruck, Ambulance and Po-Po making the second run in this hour alone.

Hey...Is the Red Barn still open? If so is the food still great?

If so - check that out too...

Depending on the day you actually come through, I will probably be on the campus of UAFS.

Let me know exactly when, and I can meet you somewhere for coffee, or a burger.

Or, just enjoy your trip through Arkansas.

The Kerosene and Moon Pie Adventure of 2005 actually took place in NW Arkansas. My friend now lives on his family farm up 'round Decatur. It's nice to be able to walk out your back door and light up the dueling tree on the other side of the creek.

Edit: Speaking of which, the Decatur General Store had a NICE selection of SIGs, Glocks, Para, Taurus, etc etc etc....I was floored. They had a Glock 29, which I had been wanting to fit to my hand for some time, but no gun shows around Tulsa had one. And there it was...at the Decatur General Store. :D

I really do love it in Arkansas. Unfortunately I don't get "home" as much as I would like.

Our last visit we took the trip up to Eureka Springs. This time we are loking for more to do that would intrest my son, other than be spoiled by his Pa Paw. He is 3 1/2.
So far we are planning on camping a night at Lake Catherine one the way up. A little horse back riding and renting a canoe sound like fun. Dad is going to try and arrange some trout fishing somewhere. Of course we can't be up there and not go to Bass Pro in MO. Although it looks like CCW in Mo is more trouble than it is worth.

Oh yeah, there will definately be lots of shooting.

Don't know if we will get over to Paragould or Little Rock. I have an aunt in both. Neither of whom have met my son yet. I should get to Paragold and go to my grandparents graves. Dang I miss them.

Sorry had a sentimental moment.

BTW is it August yet? I am ready for my trip. Too bad I only have a week.

What's the law reguarding transporting long guns? Here in TX I can have it loaded anywhere in the car, even in the seat next to me. Although I try to at least keep my rifle in the back.

Arkansas CCW Tips

As a retired cop from Blytheville, here's a couple of pointers.

(1) Don't give the LE officials a reason to stop you. Obey the traffic laws.

(2) If you are stopped, make sure the weapon is concealed, and have both your drivers license and ccw handy without alot of moving around inside the vehicle. Alot of movement makes cops nervous. If asked where your weapon is located, tell the truth. 99.99% of the time, that subject will go no further.

(3) It's Blytheville not Blythesville, but pronounced Bly-ville by the locals. Say it in any other fashion shows you as an out of state visitor. (aka - you ain't from around here are you boy)

(4) If someone tells you he/she is from Arkansas, don't look at their feet to see if they are wearing shoes. Some of us actually went to college.

(5) If you're in Little Rock, don't waste your money or time on the so called library on stilts. Only Klinton would have something like that built on an abandon bridge railroad track over a river.

(6) For great ribs go to either The Hog Pen in Conway or The Dixie Pig in Blytheville. I've snacked on pig meat all over the state and have found these two places the best in my humble opinion.

(7) Enjoy our great state. It's one of our countries best kept secrets.

I was born in Paragould. Most of my family is from either Paragould or Blythesville(sp?).

So was my wife. I meet her in Mo. and ASU brought us to Ar. 12 years and 2 kids later where still here in Jones Town.

Arkansas is one of the most beautiful and underrated states.

Most of it is anyway, the part between here and the Mississippi isn't much to look at unless you like to look at rice and cotton fields.

You know August is a hot and muggy time to visit Arkansas, right? It's not like that Texas dry heat. ;)

Although it looks like CCW in Mo is more trouble than it is worth.

What's the deal with the Missouri CCW laws? I haven't kept up with them.

Been too long since I was in Bass Pro. Is Hemingway's Restaurant still inside?

If so....gotta eat in Hemingway's. Lobster Bisque, Clam Chowder, Salad Bar and still had room for the Big Porterhouse.

One has to have energy to look at all that stuff ya know? :D

(3) It's Blytheville
Yep...one can sure tell the ones "not from around these parts" :)

Got to get into some catfish while in state.

I suggest you CCW with a pair of pants 2" bigger instead of the normal 1" larger...oh and a good belt of course. CCW + Eating Good Food+ Vacation = Tight. :D

I have tested this CCW dealie from PA to FL...not State specific it seems. :p

squirrel_hunter:

(1) By following #1 it usually avoids #2. It has for about 7 years anyway. But, if pulled over #2 is the only way to handle the situation.

(2) Thanks for the spelling correction. If I was ever there I was to young to tell anyone about it.

(5) I try to avoid anything with the name Klinton. :barf: If I didn't my Dad wouldn't let us stay at his place and we would have to get a hotel.

Flashpoint:

What is this dry heat of which you speak? This is the Texas gulf coast not El Paso. Here there is almost no reason to shower. You start sweating the second the water is off.

SM:

Lived on the coast all my life ( well the first 1 1/2 yrs were in AR ), why on earth would someone travel 500 miles inland for seafood?

Now that porterhouse is another story. That is something I could get into a good battle with. Althought the beast will loose. :neener:

Thanks for the CCW wardrobe tips. One thing I have learned is how to ccw around eating. :D

Anyone:

What's the story on carrying a rifle? In addition to the Kimber on my side, I have gotten quite used to having the AR or AK (mood dependant) behind my seat since it is legal here to have one loaded and uncased.

Rifles are fine to carry in your vehicle. This is Arkansas. Most people have something in their vehicle.

I have no problem with Swordfish, Oysters on the half shell, Escargot, Lobster, Clam Chowder...

Have you forgot how tasty Bream, Crappie, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Catfish, and lest not forget being on the sandy shore of the Red River,or White River here in AR, taking that fresh caught trout, removing entrails, pat of butter, slice of onion and lemon , wrapping in foil and tossing into the coals, a few minutes and a taste of heaven. :)

For a gourmet meal - serve with the doves you shot early that morning, breasts slit with Jalapeno Cheese, doused in Italian Dressing, in them other foil wraps on the coals. :D

Some guys take a date to a fancy place to eat. I take the ladies to the " really high class joints" .

Spoil 'em I say.

I know all about the Decatur general store. Got a friend that lives in Decatur and a bunch of us get together, hit the gen store 9you know, In case we cant live without something, then head to Gentry to shoot on said friends property. Love it out there.

Now you’re talking a horse...err fish of a different color. Fish is always better fresh from the source. Last I checked twasn't no swordfish in Beaver Lake. :neener:
