CCW in CA 5 rules

Realistically where is CCW common out there?
Genuinely curious, not baiting a California bashing thing.

Fresno I guess, Modesto? Bakersfield? Is anywhere in the major metro areas issuing them?

Any such thing as a non-resident permit?

TexasRifleman,
Good point about who has a ccw and who does not. Many in LEO have the ccw because of the job, many keep it after they retire.

Maybe they figure enough are around carrying and don't really want folks to carry unless it is for a specific purpose, like money and diamonds etc...:uhoh:

Rule #4. Display your gun, go to jail.

BS! This is not correct and is at least a little dramatic.

BTW, there are many thousands of CA CCW's. Kerrn County issues them like "shall issue". Several other counties are pretty liberal about issue. These licenses are good statewide and generally not restricted.

So while it's true that generally ccw's are hard to impossible to get in the larger counties and cities, they certainly aren't rare.

CCW in California is by county. If you live in the Bay Area or LA area you better be a friend of someone important or be a celebrity.

If you live outside these areas, you have a better chance of getting a CCW. Not good but better.

I live near a bunch of cows and pretty far from a "City" but since I am in the same county with Oakland and Berkeley, for CCW I am SOL.

CCW in California is by county.
Partially. City Chiefs of Police may also issue to residents of their cities (not that that is all that common), Sheriffs may issue to residents of their counties.

As to numbers, DOJ records that 6,885 2-year CCW were issued in CA in 2006. That's the whole state - looks like new ones, not renewals, because another doc I have says 41K are active in the state in 2006. Don't have the breakdown of LEO, former LEO, non-LEO holders.

The 5 Rules? I always remembered JAM (Jeopardy, Ability and Means...if those factors are present, it's a good shoot).

CCW in California really depends where you live. Yes, it's difficult, but it's not impossible. Also, CA CCW is only good for two years. At that point, you take a renewal class, pay another fee and you're good for another two.

Here's the doc Librarian was referencing.
