Hey all,

I am going to be visiting Grand Junction, Colorado next week and every time I go out of state with my CCW I look up all state and local laws. When looking into Grand Junction I was confused as to their local law. It states

1. Unlawful to fire any firearm, including BB or pellet gun within the city limits, unless (AD):

-- on-duty law enforcement
-- as a part of an authorized class at a shooting range
-- permission is granted by the chief of police

2. Firearm will be confiscated upon any violation of this section.

Does this mean if I had a situation where I had to discharge my firearm in self defense I would be charged with a totally separate crime of discharging my firearm even in self defense?

Could you give us a link to the Grand Junction law?
.

I'd wager pretty much every town in the US has that same law or similar, no town wants people discharging firearms within the city limits. Self defense is another story altogether. If it's a valid defensive situation, I seriously doubt they'd give you any grief. And Grand Junction is a city where I'd definitely want to carry. There's been a lot of outsiders move there because of the oil industry, with the resultant drug problems, and now the downturn in the oil biz has a lot of unemployed sketchy characters on the streets.

I think you'll find that the firing of a firearm in most city limits will almost always be against the law and you might well expect to be charged for it until the reason is established and then the charges could be dropped.
This also extends to proximity to occupied dwellings without permission in the country in some states.
Some are felony charges some are misdemeanor.
As for Grand Junction, it's very gun friendly as is most of the state and there are plenty who carry there so I doubt you'll have any issues unless you have to use it. Then expect the cops to do their job.

I live in Grand Junction. You are looking at city ordinances regarding firearm discharges. Yes, if you plan on randomly discharging your weapon, those ordinances (along with more than a few state laws) will immediately be prominent in your life. I do suspect that ordinance violations will be towards the bottom of your concern list in that situation. In the event that you discharge your firearm in a legitimate self defense scenario you should be ok. The usual intense investigation will follow, but that's standard anywhere. There are about 150,000 people in Mesa county, the latest number I could get from the Sherrifs dept.is that approximately 25,000 of us have ccw permits. Relax and enjoy your stay. We have a very (very) firearm friendly community.

Make sure your state has CCW reciprocity. If not, yup may not CCW in Colorado, as they do not accept out-of-state permits for non-residents of that state (e.g. Utah and Florida).
