Looks like I may be working in AL for a short while, and they do recognize my Missouri ccw. Can anyone give me a link to AL's ccw laws so I know where I can and can't carry? I google searched it, and while I found lots of sites telling me I could carry there, I couldn't find a specific list of their do's and don'ts.

Thanks hso, but that didn't contain any list of places I couldn't carry in AL. In MO there's a list of places like government bldgs., auditoriums with a seating capacity over a certain number, hospitals, etc. where ccw holders cannot carry. Didn't know if AL had similar restrictions. I know some states don't allow carry in places that serve alcohol, others do etc.

The sherriffs come up with their own "places you can't carry" I believe, as permits are issued by individual sherriffs.

I remember mine said no place that serves alcohol, and no gov buildings.

Welcome to Alabama!

I live in Alabama. I was raised here but then spent 26 years in Texas before coming back about two years ago. I got my Alabama permit about a year ago and I am still a little bit confused as to exactly where you can and cannot CCW. So here is my two cents worth.

Most municipal parks will have notices saying that guns are not permitted. Also, strictly speaking you are not supposed to take your handgun into any business or home without their permission. However, I talked to one of my local cops and he said that as long as you are not doing anything wrong you are all right just stay out of stores that post no handguns.

When it comes to colleges and Universities there are not state statues that forbid carrying there but all or almost all have their own statues and you can be charged with trespassing if caught. Don't carry on elementary or secondary school property.

If you have time write to the Alabama Attorney General's office for more specific instructions.

My Sheriff did not put any of his own restrictions on my license.

The only restriction I remember is that you're not allowed to carry where alcohol is served. A few buildings, like the Alabama State House where our outstanding legislature resides, do not allow firearms.

You cannot carry at a political rally/demonstration. You cannot carry while using or under the influence of alcohol or drugs (either legal or illegal). Of course the post office, banks, bars, airports and all government building are off limits. With a CCW you can pick up or drop off kids at public schools just don't enter the building while carrying. Remember,if in doubt, don't.

DeepSouth, all of our local banks have "No firearms" signs posted. Whether there is a state law prohibiting firearms in a bank(I don't think Alabama has one) or not really doesn't matter. You would be carrying at your own risk. Of course concealed means concealed so what they don't know....

Oh well, off to read through the link I just posted. I sure hope it's legal, I don't see me going into our local bank, that has been robbed several times, unarmed.

Keep it concealed and there won't be a problem anywhere except courthouses where they use metal detectors.

Yes but since the permit is honored it would be like having an unrestricted permit correct?? and you could always OC and not worry about a sheriff rules correct????

just looked on the back of my handy dandy CCP and what do ya know... a list... cannot carry into any air terminal, courthouse, city, state, or federal building...

OR any place that has a LEGAL no firearms sign posted.

OR... into any place that serves alcohol.

OR... while under the influence of alcohol.

PT1911 Please clarify something for me. My first Alabama permit that was issued in 2008 was a flimsy piece of paper that I no longer have. My new permit is a credit card size piece of plastic with my picture on it. Apparently that is how all of them are going to be from now on. On my new plastic one it does not list any places where I may not carry or any other restrictions.

What about yours?

In our county we also got a new look to our licence, it is still a laminated piece of paper with no pictures, but the little list of 'restricted places' is gone. When I noticed this I asked the Chief Deputy who happened to be in there at the time and he said that is was removed because it had caused some confusion.

And I definitely see where some of the things on the list (at least ours) were causing confusion. Some of the things were flat contradictory to the laws.

I live in Blount County and inspite of having a new sheriff, our permit hasn't changed. Same flimsy piece of paper WITH the same list of uh-uhs on the back.

well... mine is a newer design, nothing like you describe jelly jar.. it has larger print on the front and rear, and the list of do nots on the back. Difference in counties I guess.

Simple Laws

Alabama has pretty good laws for non residents. Your license is basically treated as an 'unrestricted' Alabama pistol license. This means you can carry wherever you want. The county sheriffs may place restrictions on some licenses, depending on the county, but it doesn't mean squat on my Tennessee handgun carry permit. I just follow Alabama STATE LAW...which is I can't be intoxicated....i can't carry at protests/picket lines...it is debatable if i can carry on K-12 property (those with AL licenses generally can legally) and that is it. I can carry anywhere legally when i go down there...it is pretty nice. I may be asked to leave if 'found out'...but I conceal and don't worry because I'm not breaking any laws. I can carry at an Auburn or Alabama football game because again...no law broken because I can legally carry on college property.

razorback2003, "UNRESTICTED" does NOT mean that you can carry anywhere you want. It simply means that you can carry any legal HANDGUN you wish as opposed to a seperate permit for each handgun you carry. There is a permit dedicated to each firearm requiring the serial number and description of the handgun be listed on the permit and it is only good when carrying THAT handgun. Which you get is up to the sheriff.
