I just heard from my local gun dealer that the North Carolina legislature has passed a law that now allows CCW permit holders to purchase handguns without a handgun purchase permit. I've looked on Packing.org, but didn't see anything about it. Has anyone else heard this?

MC - Take a look at the following link. It's passed the legislature with flying colors and is awaiting the Governor's signature. I however don't believe he will sign it and will instead let it become law without his signature.

I've emailed the Governor and requested status and to date have not received a response. At any rate, in a couple of weeks, it'll be law without his participation.

As of yesterday, it's now law. If you have a concealed carry permit in NC, you no longer have to get pistol purchase permits. Yeehaw!

GRNC Update 08-10-04:
Gov. Easley Signed HB 817 Into LAW

Today, August 10, 2004, Governor Mike Easley signed HB 817, the GRNC initiative to allow citizens of North Carolina with Concealed Handgun Permits to buy handguns without redundant background checks into law. Thanks to you, the loyal supporters of GRNC, the governor quietly took pen in hand and made this good idea into law. You have proved once again that when GRNC speaks the politicians listen. Give yourselves a hand.

No longer will residents of some counties, such as Durham, be made to feel like criminals while applying for a purchase permit. Nor will residents of some other counties be subjected to the arbitrary half a gun a month limit that some sheriffs feel is fair. No longer will you be forced to make at least two trips to your local sheriff’s office during your working hours to obtain these redundant permits.

You are the fuel that drives the GRNC machine. Together we can move mountains. Thank you.

Thank The Governor

Dear Governor Easley,

Thank you for eliminating the redundant background checks previously required for the purchase of handguns in North Carolina by signing HB 817 into law. This is a good law that will cut costs and encourage better training.

I appreciate your attention in this matter.

Respectfully,

TTT for anyone who's missed it, like I did...

WOOHOO!!! Now I have to go buy something just so I can save a trip to the SD and save five bucks...

I was at the Dixie gun show on Saturday. They had signs everywhere and every few minutes would announce it over the loudspeaker.

Very cool. Of course, all I bought were cleaning patches... (I bought a P22 earlier in the week)

I was there on Saturday too, Keller. I heard the announcements and was a bit surprised. I knew that the law had passed and gotten past the governor, but I did not expect it to go into effect instantaneously. It was a pleasant surprise, especially since I used the last purchase permit I have to purchase a Bulgarian Makarov from classic arms. I'll be taking my CCW class next month, so even if the county stretches it out the full 90 days I should have permit in hand by the end of the year. Merry Christmas to me.

Ahhh you guys were at the show too? Should have had a quick meet/greet :p

I was surprised when they announced that because I hadn't heard anything about that bill moving forward anymore. Definitely not disappointed though.
