Since I live in Vermont, I don't need a permit to carry concealed.

But I wonder about reciprocity in other states.

The states I wonder about the most are NH and NY. I know NH has reciprocity, I assume NY does not? I want to do some multi-day hiking in those states and am planning on getting a .357 Mag, .41 Mag, or .44 Mag revolver for bear protection. Would prefer to carry concealed so I dont scare the hippies.

Anybody know any info? I assume I should write some official in any states I plan to CCW in to check with them, and keep a copy of the response with me, but I figured I'd get a few ideas here to start.

Any comments on NH and NY laws in general would be welcomed.

Thanks for any info!

When I inquired, I was given to understand that Vermonters wishing to obtain a non-resident CCW in New Hampshire need a letter from their local police chief attesting to their good character. There's no "reciprocity" since there's no permitting system in Vermont.

SOL in NY my friend. Cannot even possess a handgun without a permit. Which you cannot get since you aren't a resident.

What's the penalty for posession in NY? I assume concealed is worse? What about transporting in a vehicle?

What about posessing a rifle or shotgun? Maybe I'll just sling one on my pack and if any hippies have a problem with it I'll tell them why......:fire: Or perhaps have a carbine inside the pack....

Or maybe I'll just stick to VT and NH :) The 'dacks sure are nice though.

Screw the bears, worry about the people. I've seen some scary folks in the Eastern NY Adirondacks foothills area when making a rest stop there some 10+ years ago, so I can imagine that weirdos can be found in the back country as well.

NY gives you a bullet to the back of the head, like most other communist despotisms for violating their laws; the best you can hope for is 25 years at hard labor on a diet of black bread and cabbage soup. ;)

My GSD keeps most weirdos at bay. And I'm 6'4", 220 lbs :)

But if neither of those deters them it's trouble.

I guess I could call it a "hunting trip" and keep to those seasons.........
