I am a 19 year old from Indiana. I know the regulations for a Carry Permit, but I can't seem to find the requirements for a CCW. Anyone have any ideas as to whether or not I need to be 21 in order to get one?

A few weeks ago, there was a guy in here who told a bizarre two page story about how he used technicalities in one state to get issued a permit in another state that was honored in his home state. I lost interest halfway through.

I know it sucks now to wait, but when you do turn 21, you won't remember how hard it was to wait.

I am sure if you do more than just a perfunctory search on Google you will find what you are looking for...

I have searched on google a lot, I was able to find regs for a "carry permit", but I'm not sure if that is referring to an open carry or a concealed carry.

I found the answer. Indiana gun laws allow a carry permit, which does not specify an open or concealed carry; it covers both. And the age is only 18 y.o.
thank you for your comments

that surprises me, in va you have to be 21 to legally own a handgun. I was going to suggest your state police website for info. Good to know you found it though.

im guessing that the 18 y.o. age is the reason that very few states recognize the indiana permit...haha but that isnt a problem as i dont travel much.
is it possible to get a CCW in mutliple states?

I find that age requirement ironic, since at 18 one can be trained to operate a variety of fully automatic firearms, a tank, etc.; carry a variety of weapons, and die defending our great country... amazing. :(
:barf:

In Virginia you have to be 18 to own a handgun.

Here is the Virginia State Code:
§ 18.2-309. Furnishing certain weapons to minors; penalty.

A. If any person sells, barters, gives or furnishes, or causes to be sold, bartered, given or furnished, to any minor a dirk, switchblade knife or bowie knife, having good cause to believe him to be a minor, such person shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

B. If any person sells, barters, gives or furnishes, or causes to be sold, bartered, given or furnished, to any minor a handgun, having good cause to believe him to be a minor, such person shall be guilty of a Class 6 felony. This subsection shall not apply to any transfer made between family members or for the purpose of engaging in a sporting event or activity.

and

§ 1-207. Child; juvenile; minor; infant.

"Child," "juvenile," "minor," "infant," or any combination thereof means a person less than 18 years of age.

There is another section that states that 18 years and older are legal for possession, but I can't access Virginia law from work, so that will have to wait until tonight.

NavyLT speaks the truth. Open carried a Beretta 92 at 19. It was a gift and I was quite appreciative. Shot it until the trigger reset spring broke, then I gave it back :neener:

You have to be 21 to purchase a handgun in va. My mistake is was under sniper fire.

No. You don't. You have to be 21 to purchase a handgun from a FFL dealer by Federal Law. You only have to be 18 to purchase a handgun from a private party in VA. If you would care to post a citation to the law, I would welcome the opportunity to read it.

Settle down

My mistake, I meant from an FFL genious. I wasn't aware that there were any laws in va regarding gun sales from one individual to another. Good to know though, I ll start carding the young looking ones.

I was just very curious as to why you posted that you had to be 21 to purchase a handgun in VA, when I had previously quoted the Virginia law that stated otherwise.

By the way, if the adjective "genious" was meant to refer to me, then a comma would have to be placed after "FFL"; otherwise, the adjective is referring to the FFL rather than to me.

Unless Indiana has changed the laws in the last bunch of years - 21 for CCW, 18 for a "sportsman's permit" (hunting only).

edit: Apparently, they have changed the laws in the last bunch of years. It does appear to be 18 now.

Also - if you want a definitive answer, call your county sheriff's office.

NavyLt, ; : now you're grading my punctuation. If you're going to start doing that to everyone, you'll have to quit your day job. Thanks for your military service by the way.

indiana has changed its laws. my application is currently in the works, and you can get it at 18. they also are now offering a lifetime carry permit, so i hope to be getting that.

Day job? What day job?!? :)

Actually, I am quite impressed, you have apostrophes where they belong and not where they don't. You'd be surprised how many senior people send up evals and awards that are screwed up.

I'm sorry if I came off a bit harsh, but I just have a tender spot for 18 to 20 year olds because I joined the Army National Guard at 17 and know how I felt when everyone in my unit wanted to go off and do something and I couldn't because of my age. It really bugs me when I look at all the young men and women here that we, as a society, feel are responsible enough to defend our freedoms and then we turn around and take those exact same freedoms that they are fighting for away from them.
