Depends upon your state law but my understanding is that most states have no law regarding carrying a back-up firearm. However, I do recall reading a few post where people stated it it was illegal in their state. Not sure if it was an old and unenforced law or something you will go to jail for. Check your laws and go from their.
 
Some states limit the number of handguns you can list/register on your CCW permit, but not how many you can carry on your person at a time.

In case no one has mentioned it;) you need to check the laws of your own state through the attorney general's office.
 
I was involved in a "felony police stop" once. Kinda funny when the officer asked me if I was armed and I replied "yes". The officer asked me where and what? I replied, a 45 in the small of my back, a 357 on my hip, a 25 in my left pocket, a 22 in my right pocket and a 38 on my left ankle. He looked at me a little funny and asked me to slowly disarm. I complied very slowly while looking down the muzzle of an m16 aimed at me. when his back-up arrived and saw it was me on the ground they started laughing and told the officer I was fine and he could put his rifle down. (I was doing a class3 demostration, I always carry alot for back-up) :D

I just signed up for my ccw class and ive been all stressed as to what to buy that would be easy to carry and fit my needs and you guys come along and fill me in about back-ups!
Great,like i wasnt stressing already.....

Haha,j/k i wasnt stressed really,but ive really didnt give no thought to carrying a back-up.Ill start with 1 and go from there. :)
 
I'm not entirely sold on backups.

On the one hand, if one bad thing can happen (you have a reason to use deadly force in the first place,) another bad thing can happen. (Your primary can get jammed, dropped, or taken away from you.) Your planning mentality must imagine that all bad things happen at once.

On the other hand, I think that the bulk of the advantage you gain from being armed and aware comes from the fact that you are armed at all, not that you have more than one gun. When your entire world is falling in around you, you will have to remember TWO gun systems, locations, and drawing methods. I also think that if you are really keeping them as secure as you need to, the odds of something bad happening (like dropping it in public, having a child get to it, or having it either too loose or too snug when you really need it, etc) go up exponentially with every gun you are carrying. I think that for ME, in my life and situation, the risk outweighs the advantage of a backup gun.

I regard the pistol I carry as the backup to the rifle I keep in my home and vehicle.
 
I've got my Kansas CCW, and I don't recall ever reading/learning that you can't have a backup. I've got the folder with all the 'family safety act' or whatever it's called around somewhere.
 
California (at least my county) requires you to have each weapon you will carry printed on your permit, including caliber and s/n. They only allow 3. :(

AFAIK, there is no limit to how many of those 3 you can carry at the same time.

I don't know how many times I've slipped on one of my brother's guns to carry.

Very serious. We're also required to do a qualification shoot with each one. If I get a new carry weapon, I have to get an instructor to watch me shoot it, take it to the sheriff's office and have the clerk verify the s/n, wait for a new permit to be printed, place a fingerprint on and sign said permit, and then wait up to a couple of weeks for the sheriff to sign it and mail it to me.

It makes me choose my carry weapons very carefully.

Nevada had been similar...where, the make-model-serial# Weapon you live-fire-qualified with was stated on your CCW Permit...and you were not allowed to carry anything else...and it was limited I think to two or three Guns of your choice



Then, things changed, to where if you qualify with any Revolver, you can carry any Revolver you like...but, if you qualify with an Automatic, then ONLY that Make and Model of Automatic is permissible for Carry, and, any additional makes or models, you have to 'qualify' with individually, for them to be permissible for CCW-ing on your Permit.

Relax, you'll be fine. I don't believe there are any restrictions in my state if you have the carry permit.

Not to contradict you Clarence but I haven't found anything that says you cant have a back up yet and I just reread the entire CCW permit package. We are limited on where we can carry but that is about it.

It is a PITA. It's one of those issues that I can see two different sides of.

1. I'm comforted by knowing that people issued CCW permits in my area are capable of hitting the broadside of a barn with their carry weapons. You never know, I might be attacked by a barn one day and get saved by one of those wonderful CCWers. :)

I'm also comforted in knowing that they've passed background checks, been voluntarily fingerprinted, and met with a representative of the SO in person before they were issued a permit (hopefully that means they're not loony).

2. On the other hand (and it's a big other hand), I firmly believe that the 2nd amendment declared our right to carry weapons. I think it is a violation of our constitutional rights to require a permit to carry. It is a violation of those rights to limit what/where we can carry.

I guess you could say I'm conflicted.
