I celebrated Christmas and the new HighRoad Forum by buying
myself a new shotgun. I was looking at the cheapies until I read
all of "your" current and archived posts on TFL. Decided to get a
Remington 870, which I did. It's somewhat of a mystery model
though. Remington 870 Security Model 5077. It seems to be a
Rem 870 Home Defense with no dimples in the mag tube and a
+2 extension. Couldn't find it on the Remington website. Anyway
it's a beauty and I am sure we're going to spend alot of time
together on duty and off. So here's my question, which
accessories? I know it's a good gun as is, but what aftermarket
goodies help make a good gun great? And what about the sight?
I absolutely love the Mossberg Ghost Rings and was hoping to
have a similar set installed in the 870. Heck I may even have
the Mossberg sights installed on the 870. Thoughts?

Sure, it's easy for a gunsmith to drill & tap the Remington receiver to take the Mossberg ghost ring rear, and silver-solder the front sight on the end of the barrel. I've outfitted an 870 that way, and it works perfectly. (Also, the Mossberg ghost-ring sights are WAY cheaper than the competition!)

Another valuable accessory is the SideSaddle from TacStar. Holds 4 or 6 rounds of ammo. on the left side of the receiver. If you have the standard fore-end, remember that this will bind against the 6-round SideSaddle, and will have to be modified to get the action to work. If you don't want to trim one side of the fore-end, get the 4-round SideSaddle.

There's good stuff around, but I suggest holding off a little on the addons. Run a few cases of ammo through that 870, then add or modify whatever it needs to accomplish the mission.

Here's the short list of what it has to have right now:

Reliability(Not usually a problem with an 870)

The stock has to fit you.

The sight(s) have to be usable by you in all lighting conditions.

The trigger has to be clean and at or under 4 lbs pull.

That's it. I'd bend the rules a bit and go for sling swivel studs.

After you've shot that thing until you and it are a unit, then go for the bellsnwhistles. In this order I'd...

Add a Side Saddle.

Have a decent smith lengthen the forcing cone.

Get a good light and mount it.

Set it up for tubes.

After that, it's a buckdancer's choice.

Other than the 20"slug barrel, my HD 870 is a stock Wingmaster. I've been toying with the idea of adding a one round Wilson combat extension with the QD stud http://www.wilsoncombat.com/accessories/sgt_access/quick_detach.asp Is this what you mean by sling swivel studs?

Yes, though those are not quite the ones I use.

Basically, we need a means of attaching a sling for when the weapon is employed outside the house, and easy to take off when not snagging is more important than slinging.

As for a one shot extension, Sure, if that's what you want. Best guess, it'll add 3 oz or so for the extension, another 3 for the round, 6 oz out there help control the muzzle rise.

Got a hunch that the best all round extension is two shots, but it's more a gut reaction than an intellectual choice.

Thanks Preacherman! I was hoping to get some validation on
using the Mossberg Ghost Rings on the 870. I almost bought
the 590A1 just because of those sights. I found a few places
that sell 'em for around $55-60 a set, so ya, they are alot
cheaper than most add-on SG sights.

And Dave, I am an LEO and FI, this SG will be spending alot
of time at the range with me. I expect to have a few cases
throught it as soon as the temp gets above 7 degrees. Until
then I can only dream and take it out for short sessions. What
do you think about the reduced recoil loads?

I am thinking about buying a M3 Tactical Light and an 870
mount (there's a few on the market I have found). Then I
can use it back and forth with my 3rd generation Glock 22.

Either way, I am becoming enamored with the versatility of
the Remington 870.

mlk, watch out with that M3 on your Glock... I bought one and put it on the gun for HD, having read a lot about it, and kept it that way for months. Then I found out that lots of Glocks were experiencing malfunctions when the M3 was fitted (allegedly it warps the frame slightly, causing misfeeds). I took mine to the range and bingo - malfunctions! This from a Glock that has never malfunctioned in its life! I was really scared, I tell you - thank heavens that during the period I had the light on the gun, no-one broke in! I don't think the same problem will apply to an 870, but you might want to shoot your Glock extensively with the M3 attached to verify reliability, as the problem doesn't seem universal: some Glocks work great with the M3, some don't... Go figure!

Never used the R/R stuff until I bought some of the Estate SWAT Buck, which I like very much. I'm relatively immune to kick, which makes a big difference.

You're an FI, so let me alter my advice and give TWO options, besides the one I did already. Obviously you're cognizant past beginner level.

First, keep the 870 stock. Duplicate your duty weapon. This will keep your "Chops" and feel the same. The ranks will also see you using what they use, gaining confidence thereby, hopefully.

Second choice, add as you see fit, and use the piece as a test bed for stuff that might help your dept in its mission. Lights, mag extensions, sight setups, etc, are possibilities here.

Back when I instructed, an 870 of mine was used in exactly this fashion. As I was retiring, some agency 870s were getting extensions, tho I've no idea whether I was the inspiration. In any case, the credit went ewlsewhere.

And 870s are versatile, but watch out, they tend to accumulate!
