I have a CETME and a resident gun expert at my work told me that HK 91 and G3 mags are interchangeable with the CETME. I recently found a deal at $3.99 a 20 rd mag so I bought 10 ($42) and they don't fit. My question is do/can they work, am I doing something wrong, and was I told wrong?

mr_blove, can't speak for your Cetme, but I have a CAI cetme that does accept the H&K factory mags without any problems. Will your mags go in but not lock or won't even enter the mag well?

Unfortunately, it's a known issue with Century CETMEs that some will accept G3 mags readily, and some will not. Is it apparent at all why they don't work? Are they obviously hanging up somewhere?

Issues can vary depending on whether you have a stamped or cast reciever- Century has been known to slightly misalign things they're welding, or maybe run a bit of a sloppy bead that you might need to polish smooth. Take a close look at the inside of the mag well and see if anything obvious jumps out at you.

If your receiver is pretty close to allowing the HK mags to fit you can do what I did on my last CETME.

I was able to file down the mag well of the receiver until the HK mags would latch. You have to take this slow and easy but it will work if the bottom of the mag well is preventing the mags from latching. However, it may be the configuration of the mag latch as well as some may need a bit of modification
as well so that the mags can engage the latch properly.

The latch at the front of the receiver that holds the front of the mag is wider on the CETME than the G3...

When people say that G3 mags will work in their CETME, what they are usually doing is jamming the mag in hard enough to deform (push it in enough) the front of the G3 mag enough to allow the back of the mag to lock in place.

While this will usually 'work', the G3 mags will eventually break if switched between an HK-91 and a CETME (because the front of the mag may need to be pushed back out slightly to be caught by the HK-91 'latch.'

If you'll only be using the G3 mags in your CETME, try mashing it in hard enough to have it catch. That should work...

Or, you can just pick up a couple of steel CETME mags. They are available at reasonable prices (but certainly not as cheap as G3 mags) and they'll last forever.

For what it's worth...

I have looked around a little bit and have only seen mags like the ones I bought, where is a good place to get some at?

+1 Forrest. Dude has more practical experience working on these, and FAL, rifles than probably the rest of us combined.

How many FALs you built now?

Quite a few, but you can never have enough FALs...:)

Thanks for the kind words, G...

Actually, we currently have two Imbel kits at the shop that just came in yesterday, with the DSA Type II receivers waiting for them. We have to blue or park (I didn't take a close enough look yesterday to remember) them and assemble them...

We should be getting a third in on Friday...

Have you shot that beautiful Yugo M95 again yet, or are you really serious about saving it for posterity...?

Forrest

I picked up 50 G3 mags for use in my Cetme a while ago, and roughly half would lock up and feed in the gun. Those that wouldn't lock in required modification to the mag catch slot in the mag body. I just took a dremel and removed a little bit of metal from the top of the mag catch slot and now they all work great.
