Rate the above PHP MV-9 for: historic relativity, current value, home defense, CCW, service weapon, accuracy, target & plinking, and other areas. Good Luck ! :)

A 9mm Pistol developed in Croatia during the wars for independence following the break up of Yugoslavia. Kind of a cross between an M9 and a P 38. Not a large # produced and reliability/quality rumored to be hit or miss (think of the gun version of the Yugo auto.). Have no idea on price or value. The same people later developed the Springfield XD.

Php mv-9

You are both right . I'm into military handguns, for the most part. Ironically, my two favorites were on opposite sides during WWII, namely, the Colt .45 -1911, and P-38. I thought it was a tragedy the DOD chose the Beretta 92 over the 1911. But, I remembered "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." , in which a 4" version of the P-38 was used. I had to have one. My search for the 4" barrel(which was advertised at one time), was too late. Imagine my surprise, when years later, the PHP (a P-38 & P92 mix) with a 4" barrel was advertised. I had to have it, and got it. It is bulky and ugly, but I think of it as exotic (or exuglic). Since I have not had my PHP for long, and due to the cost and lack of availability of ammo, shooting it has been nil. Could some of you, who have shot your PHP, give feed back on info, especially functioning reliability, and accuracy ? Thanks ! :)

Traded a Mosin 91/30 for this one awhile back.

Decent enough pistol. Basically a double-stack P-38 with a single under-barrel recoil spring instead of the two on the sides like a P-38.

Mine works great no problems to report, but have only fired a couple of hundred rounds. With spare parts and mags being virtually non-existent it's not one of my main range guns.

I think it looks kinda cool in an old school Euro pistol sorta way. Not really that big or "unwieldy" for an all steel pistol. No worse than a High-Power, CZ-75 or P-38.

Certainly not my first choice for a CCW but a good home defense or vehicle gun. The size and weight of being all-steel makes it much easier to control and give it less felt-recoil than small lightweight polymer or alloy framed pistols.

Reliability excellent
Accuracy good
Ergos good

Not the greatest pistol ever made but a decent functional pistol that works as advertised.

No problems with mine so I have no idea what's going on with yours.

Weak mag springs maybe???

CZ-75 mag springs will work for a replacement.

Yeah I didn't have a whole lot invested in the Mosin. IIRC paid around 60-70 at a pawn shop years ago. Execellent condition but a war production model so the finish was rather crude. I also threw-in a bayonet and a sling, so maybe $100-150 possiblly current prices at the time.

The guy's a real Bubba who picked up the PHP for cheap, then was broken-hearted when he found out there weren't any tru-glo sights, pearl grips or other gee-whiz gee-gaws available for it and that he couldn't get dozens of cheap spare mags from Pro-Mag.

He was really happy with the Mosin. The first thing he asked was if I knew where to get an Archangel stock for it. I'm sure by now it's no longer recognizable as a Mosin.

Yeah it was one I had[I think for an XD] that I trimmed to fit. Came out pretty good and hides some nasty scuffs and scrapes on the grips. I'd love to find some nice grips....pearl or otherwise.

If you do need spare mags XD[not XDM] mags will fit but you have to cut-out the catch hole as the XD mags have it in another spot than the PHP. The last round hold open even works.

However internals like the spring and follower are not the same and do not interchange. Internally it's actually closer to a CZ-75 mag. The CZ mags will also work but in addition to the catch hole mod you also have to cut down the back of the mag or the slide hits it. Not sure if the hold open works with the CZ mags as I haven't modified any.
