A Savage 12 BVSS. This is an older gun but with a very low round count according to the previous owner. Looking at it I can't see where it was used much at all. There was virtually no copper fouling in the bore and the bolt is "polished' by wear in the places I would expect it to be so I believe the low round count of under 100 rounds. I bought just as you see in the pics with scope and bipod on it at a very decent price. Down side it is an older version meaning no Accu-Trigger. Rather than doing a trigger job on this one myself i have decided to drop in an SSS trigger. They are adjustable down to 2 ounces but I will likely set this one at about 1 pound.

As for the change in the line-up I am going to let this rifle replace my 22 CHeetah as my main varmint rifle. The barrel on the CHeetah is burning out a bit and groups have opened up to over 1/2 inch. I no longer take trips west for coyotes and simply don't hunt varmints like I did when I was younger. This Savage will do for the occasional 'yote or chuck here in Indiana.

The CHeetah, btw, will be re-barreled but in a much different caliber, either the .338 Whisper or the .375 Whisper...want to talk to JD first. It will be turned into one of his Incognito rifles...a fully suppressed rifle that looks like a bull barrel...no clue what it is till the trigger is pulled.

I took the Savage out today and fired 6 rounds just to see if it would group. First round out of a very clean, cold barrel was about 4 inches right and an inch low, next 5 went into about 3/4 of an inch just right of the POA. This was with the cheapest Remington ammo Wal-Mart had and an 8 pound trigger. I expect it to do better with the BVAC ammo I have on order and the new trigger will help me out as well. I will start loading for it later. The really thrown out cold bore shot puzzles me some, it is by far the widest from the POA I have seen. I will do some testing to see if this will be common to this rifle.

Now a look at the newest rifle on the team....

Oh also congrats on the new rifle, looks sweet.

And the .338 or .375 Whisper will be a righteous rifle when you get it completed.

Here's the target from today, you can see how far out the cold bore shot was. The size of the group I attribute to the weather (cold out today), I was rushing things trying to squeeze into a busy bench, cheap ammo, and a very heavy trigger. I am not going to clean it tonite and I will see were the first shot goes tomorrow. Hopefully I will be able to settle down at the bench and spend more than 3 minutes shooting the group after running down to the 100 yard target backing and back...lol.

Shot it again yesterday, took my time with it, made sure I kept a consistent stock weld and pressure on the stock. 5 rounds went into slightly over 1/2 inch without throwing the wide clean bore shot. It will get a cleaning before the next trip out to see it it repeats that initial shot. I have had rifles that threw a clean bore shot off a small increment but never one that threw it over 3 inches. I don't mind storing a rifle with a fouled bore but it will entail cleaning the rifle in the field or at the range rather than at home which is pain.

The scope on this is a Bushnell Banner 6X18, not the worst scope in the world but still a somewhat bargain basement piece of glass. The mounts and rings on the other hand are excellent, appear to be Burris. They are however 1 inch rings and on a high power scope I prefer 30mm, perhaps the Pentax Lightseeker 30.

I have also decided to give the trigger a go myself. When I has the shop I did Savage triggers and probably did close to a hundred of them over the years. That has been a good number of years ago but what the hell...if I screw it up I can always buy the SSS.
