I have aquired a Mossberg 500 persuader model. Can a longer barrel be put on in lieu of the shorter barrel that came with the gun?

Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated.

How many rounds can you put in the persuader? You might have the longer mag tube then finding a barrel may not be that fun other thn that its no probalm at all.

ALL Mossberg 500-type pump guns can use the same barrels. They're only governed by the mag tube length and the barrel attach type.

If yours is the 7+1 mag tube length and the 500 attach type, you're stuck to the one 20" barrel as is....but you can switch your mag tube to the 5+1 length and then use *all* 500 barrels. You can further switch your mag tube to the 590 attach and use all 590 and 835 barrels as well.

+1

I'll add that the mag tubes will also require you to make a mag tube wrench from some scrap wood as well as get a shorter spring. That job is not as simple. Most 590 barrels are not going to be of any sporting configuration, though.

Not so, Mossberg makes a 28' vent ribbed barrel w/Accuset chokes for the 7+1. http://www.maverickarms.com/pages/barrels.htm (scroll down)

Use vice grips to grip the last 3/4" of the mag tube where the barrel attaches....pad the pliers with some leather or thick paper to avoid scoring/scratching. Used the same method on literally hundreds of guns. Never failed yet. The mag tube is solid at that end and takes gripping with no probs. When you reinstall the mag tube, you only twist it tight hand tight....hold the receiver between your knees and use both hands.

The spring is ok as is. It's not going to cause any probs. The springs are all the same. It's the same part number.

The good thing about the 590 parts is that you can build yourself your own 590 without having to buy a second gun. It can transform into pretty much anything you want. Hell, you can even use it as a black powder muzzle loader.

I just got a mossberg 500 this morning with a 24" rifled barrel. I want to put a 18 1/2" barrel on it.

the have them at a local shop with sights for 99.

two questions I have are,

is the barrel easy to change ?

should i get a rifled barrel or not?

it is primarily for home defence, but i would imagine that i might use it for deer/turkey hunting if the necessity arises.

or should I just leave it with the barrel it came with???

in case anyone in wondering price it was 389.

Go here and download an owners manual.

Changing barrels on a standard 500 should take less then 1 minute.

You already have a rifled deer barrel, so don't buy another one.

Rifled barrels are intended to use only sabot slugs. The rifling spins the sabot slug to provide rifle like accuracy.

A shotgun barrel intended for shot or buckshot or rifled slugs will be a smoothbore.

Your 24" deer barrel would get you by for HD, but a smothbore barrel would be a big improvement for best patterning and no lead build-up from shooting shot in a rifled barrel.

You are correct and I have also not seen the Mossberg 28' vent ribbed barrel. I have three different barrels for my persuader 12 ga.and two different mag tubes. The total cost of all was just over $500 but I have a gun for three different uses
