I'm the same boat waiting for UPS:D Excruciating:banghead:

All this talk about 1858's got my interest up. Cabela's sale price on an 8" steel frame was enough to push me over the edge. Got some powder and some balls and caps...and um....a shoulder holster:evil: Hoping to go shooting in a couple weeks.

Looks a little more like a M92 without the loop. :D Neat lookin' little gun. Rifling twist rate? Just wondering.

Here's a 92 for comparison.

Ya know, if I got one, isn't a side hammer authentic or anything, if I wanted to hunt with it and considering my old eyes and dim light of dawn, I'd scope it, why not? I don't like scopes on little 92s cause it messes up their handiness in the field, but for stand hunting it really doesn't matter and where I hunt, movement is more than likely going to be in the wee hours when you might can see crosshairs in a bright scope, but iron sights, forget it. Been there, done that. :D

The question: Is it wrong to put a scope on it?

IMHO it would be silly not to. And while you're at it, make sure that the scope is appropriate for the gun, i.e. at least 12x for a rifle but not more than 2x for a pistol. See photos below.

Big Brown

You have some interesting suggestions. I appreciate it. It gives me things to think about as I wait for the Truck!

I have been reading the owner's manual and I can not find a twist rate. They do mention procedures and load information for PRB, Maxi-Balls, Maxi-hunters, and .44 cal Saboted 44 (mag) bullets.

I will try PRB and conicals of course, but, I am really interested in 250 Kieth style bullets and TC Sabots.

I've bid on a couple TC scout pistols recently. in-line rifles never interested me, but the pistols are cool. Saw one on gunbroker recently, Scout pistol, with a pistol scope already installed. Just needed Morini target grips.

I'd like the Big Brown Truck to bring me a pot o' gold, but it won't. No one is going to send any gold or even that cheap stuff called silver. Oh well, I'm used to being an armed peasant. :D

1 in 38? Not 1 in 48? Odd. Wonder what it shoots best? Wonder if round ball works?

The long discontinued CVA Blazer inline was also designed with an external hammer and a 1 in 38" twist which tends to favor conical bullets.
Patched balls should shoot okay at moderate range, which may even be able to be improved upon with some experimentation. But the barrels with 1 in 30 something inch twists generally aren't the most favorable for shooting round balls.

Yeah, my 1:24 Cabela's Hawken Hunter Carbine prefers HEAVY minies or sabots and I've been thinking of finding a 1:48 inline to play with, but they all seem to be in under 1:30 twist. I could just get a Hawken in 1:48, Lyman has 'em, for instance. I just would like to try an inline for the ease of cleaning. I'd really like it to handle percussion caps, though, and a lot of 'em take 209 primers. I've about given up trying to find one in 1:48, though. I understand why, just sorta irks me.

No matter. My Hawken shoots a 360 Lee minie of pure lead quite well and it's a tack driver with a 240 grain .44/sabot. It also likes the 385 grain Hornady great plains bullet. Patched round ball will hit okay to 50 yards even in THAT gun, but worthless at 100 yards.

Brown truck was actually a US Mail Jeep

Well after a long wait (two weeks) my ship finally came in. I was shooting my .32 Crockett when the mail lady dropped off my TC Scout rifle. I was pumped because the Crockett was shooting real well. When the Scout arrived it was in an iron sight configuration. After a quick glance at the manual to get the correct load, I dumped 80 gr fff Goex in the barrel and drove home a 250 gr Kieth style 44 cast Leadhead in a Hornady sabot. After a fouling shot to make sure that everything was gonna work, I took three shots to see how it was going to print. The first two shots were touching. I dialed in some Kentucky windage and tagged the bull at 25 yards.

At this point, I am a real happy camper. After cleaning the piece I began to work on scoping it. I tried some Weaver bases but they didn't look quite right. I scrounged the Leupold bases and rings off of a TC Contender barrel that I hadn't used in over a year and began fitting scopes. Tried a Simmons and it looked cheap. Tried a 40 MM Burris and it looked too big. Tried a 50 MM and it did not fit the rings. Finally in desperation I tried a little 4X that I had on a .22.

Just right.

Now I have a cowboy looking inline that is threatening to really shoot conicals and my .32 is shooting PRBs real well.

Good for you! That scope looks real nice mounted on it too. :)

THR member frontiergander posted this picture yesterday about how his CVA Blazer with a 22 inch long 1 in 38" twist barrel shot this record book ram at 200 yards with 80 grains of Shockey's Gold fffg and 295 grain Powerbelts.

000_1242.jpg

About how high did aimed...

my guess would be about2 to 2 1/2 feet. I used the thick post in the scope and put it even with the top of the rams horns.

That's pretty amazing shooting especially considering the same twist rate that both of your guns share. This gives you something to look forward to trying out with the Scout and what it might be capable of! ;)

He also posted about loads...

70-80gr APP with a 245 or 295gr powerbelt will do on anything i am shooting at. Really likes 70gr APP with the 295 powerbelt, I had 5 shots touching at 50 yards with it yesterday.

Scout

I near zeroed the scope today. I really need to go to a formal range and sit down and shoot some targets.

:scrutiny:
