I just recently had a chance to meet Charl. He came to my church this past Sunday, and just today I spent a good couple hours chatting with him. He was a survivor of the St James Massacre in Cape Town, South Africa in July 1993. He was in the church during a Sunday evening service when Marxist terrorists attacked with grenades and machine guns. He was apparently the only armed parishioner, and returned fire with his 5-shot .38 snubbie wounding at least one terrorist and helping to drive them off. 11 people were killed and 53 wounded. He was credited by many with preventing many more injuries and deaths.

He is a very remarkable man, and had a presence of mind that I only hope I'll be able to display should a nightmare scenario like that play out in my life.

He wrote a book on the incident called "Shooting Back - The Right and Duty of Self Defense". He was kind enough to give me a copy (note to self - donate some money to his group Frontline Fellowship). I would be happy to share it with anyone interested on the condition that it either be returned to me or given on to someone else when finished ('course SWMBO and I both need to finish reading it first). For now at least it can also be bought on Amazon for ~$10. Apparently it is going to be updated to an Americanized version soon, and so may not be available in this form much longer.

He told me that several years later he actually met with the terrorist group (and even preached to them) that had attacked the church and even spoke with the man that organized the assault. They had chosen the church becuase it was seen as a "gun-free" zone that could be attacked with no risk of retaliation. They were very surprised to find their assumptions in error!

Friend of mine's fiancee was one of the survivors - last time I heard, she still hated firearms because of that day, notwithstanding the fact that an armed parishioner probably saved her life.

I understand that these were the same weapons used in another attack on a pub I used to visit regularly, the Heidelberg Tavern in Observatory, Cape Town - 4 people killed that night.

Well, there's sheeple everywhere. Rather than saying there shouldn't be any guns, if they should be saying that everyone should have them in order to make themselves an uninviting target.
