I was at the LGS today and got to chatting with the guy about Sharps rifles (I've drooled over them since I was a kid). He looked up what they could get and came up with a Charles Daly 1874 Sharps in 45-70 for $972. Anyone know if that's a good deal? That's as cheap as a bottom of the line one from Pedersoli, and this one looks like it comes with a nice checkered stock. I've done some searching on the internet but haven't been able to find much on them. Anyone know how the quality is?

I just might have to jump on this if it's as good of a deal as it sounds. Here's the rifle from the Charles Daly site:

edit: after researching some more it appears all Charles Daly firearms have a lifetime warranty, so that's encouraging. Hmmm.....

You'll need it. Their customer service is nice, and they pay for the shipping, but...

Darn it, I was hoping to hear that this is such a good deal I'd be an idiot to turn it down.....

Now that I've got the Sharps in my head I'm just looking for an excuse to buy one....may have to be a Pedersoli if the CD isn't good.

Nice looking rifle....I really prefer the looks of the straight stocks to the pistol grip, even if they're not as comfortable to shoot.

It seems like a lot of the straight stock models I've seen have a crescent buttplate, though, and from what I've read (never shot one) it tends to make recoil a lot worse. I'm having a harder time making up my mind about this than my wife in a shoe store. Maybe I'll just do like her and buy one of each :)

Mine has a shotgun style butt. You are right about the crescent buttplates making recoil pretty nasty...my buddy has a Hi Wall in .45-70 and I refuse to shoot it. A few times was enough.

Here's a slightly better pic of the Billy Dixon...mine has a globe front sight however.

I don't shoot a Sharps, but my Browning 1885 with the crescent buttplate isn't bad at all. It's close to 9 pounds with the 28" octagonal barrel though. I shoot a handload with a 300 gr. HP at 2100 fps and no problem at all with recoil.

When you get into shooting the 45/70 round you enter into a whole new realm of shooting. It's addictive and satisfying.Whether you shoot a $900/$1000 or better Italian replica or a $225 Handi rifle(excellent accuracy by the way) the big round is a lot of fun.45/70 is almost a religion.

I have this unhappy feeling that the Italian-made guns are about to take a big jump in price because of the value relationship between the U.S. dollar (which is way down) against the Euro (which is at record heights). Now might be a good time to buy, regardless of what rifle you pick.

Interestingly enough, the gun shop guy said the same thing yesterday, except his reason was more that this is the time of year most places adjust their prices. Probably both are true. Christmas bonus is coming in the next few days, so I may have to move soon. I found a Pedersoli Long Range Sharps for about $1100, so I'm thinking of going with that.

Sort of... What he was saying in a backhanded way was that this is the time of year most companies within the industry put out their 2008 price lists - if they haven't done so already. In the case of imports, those prices will reflect the strong Euo v. a weak U.S. dollar.
