I've been thinking about getting a snubby in .44 special. I saw these Charter Bulldogs, and did some research. The reasearch said that the older Bulldogs were good while the new ones were pretty shoddy. Is there a way I could tell an old Bulldog from the new? Also is there another good.44 special snubby for under $400?

I had a bunch of the older ones and they just didn't hold up. I got rid of them and got a couple of Taurus 66s. They were so horribly inaccurate that I ditched those and got Rossis. And that's where I've stayed with my el cheapo revolvers.
I wanted to like the .44 Spc. so much, but after awhile all the Charter Arms I had (.44s and .38s) began binding on me. Once, I needed a rubber hammer to knock the cylinder out of the frame. I swore in my wrath that I'd never buy another one. To make matters worse, the .44 Charter Arms only stayed a few dollars behind the Ruger Security-Six .357s. A good .38 +P will blow away a .44 Spc. any day in stopping power and a .357 mag 125-gr JHP will devastate it. The Ruger also was so much better built that it became a no brainer to get rid of the Charter Arms.
For budget, the Rossis also were just better on their face. A casual comparison of the two revolvers showed that Charter Arms was just no competition. The large hole in the .44 was impressive psychologically, and YES, THERE IS VALUE IN THAT. But ultimately, I couldn't handle the binding.
