I just got one of these today, it was made in Stratford, Conn and says just Bulldog Pug on the barrel. I took it apart about halfway today and cleaned and oiled it up. Finish is in great condition and the trigger is not a Colt but is comfortable (DA). I was wondering if anyone knew anything about one made in Stratford? I have registered it for warranty on the website and noticed they are no longer made in Stratford.... Do I have an old one? If I do, anyone know how it will hold up? I also load for 44 Special/Mag

Don't hot load these older Charter Arms . They won't take it .. I carry mine with Blazer 200 gr gold dots I think that around 800fps . I have some cowboy loads also for range .

Stratford, Conn from 1974 until 1991.

Yup, that is an older one. I have been carrying a Stratford Bulldog Pug since 1987. DO NOT feed it anything hotter than Speer's 200 gr. Gold Dot ammo. I would recommend 200 gr. only loads. The gun is not going to blow up but it will be beaten into a quick death if used with heavy loads. This is not an internet myth, I have seen many Bulldogs that were abused with hot handloads. A 200 gr. bullet at 850 fps. will do any job you need done. Keep a VERY close watch on every screw on the gun. They WILL loosen up with recoil. You can loc tite them if you want. Take screwdrivers to the range with you. Overall they are great carry snubs if not abused and should be carried a lot and shot just enough to become proficient with. It is made for carrying all day, if you take it to the range every time you go and run a bunch of rounds through it it will have a limited lifespan. Think of it like one of those compact spare tires they put in cars nowdays, it will get you down the road a ways but you don't want to drive to California on one. TIP, do not remove the cylinder release unless you want to spend a long evening figuring out how to put it back together. There is a tiny washer in the assembly and if you unknowingly lose it, it will not function.

I have a Stratford model from the early 80s.

I practice with really soft-loaded cowboy action 240-grain loads, and carry it with 200-grain Gold Dots.

Great little gun.

Here's mine:

Just out of curiosity... what kind of ballistics do you get with the ported short barrel? Have you chrono'd anything?
