Hey all, I picked up this Very Nice Charter Arms .44 Bulldog Pug Stainless with factory Bobbed Hammer. Says Stratford, CT. I am no Charter expert by a long shot, and I am not sure what I have exactly. Finish looks like polished stainless. Is this rare? Old?

Does anyone have any history they can share on this version? It looks in great shape. Lockup is tight with the hammer down. I cleaned it up and it was not bad at all. Must not have been shot much lately. I seems much nicer than the new build ones I have been looking at lately.

I was just hoping to get little info on her since I don't know crap about them, but love the round and have been looking for a small .44. Oh, and since I lie if I don't post a pic...

Nice lookin dog you got there! Sorry I don't know enough to answer your questions but Congratulations on a Very nice revolver.

Well, I took her along to the range today. Put some rounds downrange and was pleasantly surprised. All hand loads, either Hornady 200 gr. or Speer Gold Dot 200 gr. with various powders. Nothing hurt, and all rounds were quite controllable with the stock rubbers.

Using my standard sight picture of right on the line, all loads were a little low at 25'. It was easy to figure out the sight picture that would put the shots right on. Windage was good. Minute of bad guy is it? I figure 240 gr. projectiles would be a little higher, but I hear you should stay @ 200 gr. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.

I got the impressions she don't like to work dirty, but that's fine. Unique can burn a little crusty if you are not going full out. She is not intended to be an all day range gun. Very happy with the pick up. :)

Here's some pictures of mine. Is it rare? Let's put it this way, yours is the first other one I've ever seen. I bought it so long ago that it was when you could buy guns on eBay.

Sweet! I think I'm really liking the funny little hammer. I had to put a bit of blue loctite on the screw that goes through the hammer, but the other screws were all tight.

It is certinaly interesting that it's Stratford made, Stainless Steel (which wasn't used at Charter until 1981-ish) with the shrouded barrel (introuduced about 1990)....

So yours would have been built towards the very end of the orginal "Charter Arms Corp" but before the "Charco" and "Charter 2000" guns... Also maybe one of the first Charco guns that was assembled from the left over Charter Arms Corps parts....

This web site has the most info I know of about the history of Charter and it's models.

It's a nice looking Bulldog Pug.

The only reason I know of for sticking to lighter loads is the tendency of the bullets to back out of the cases with heavy loads, binding the cylinder

I used to shoot a Pug a lot back in the mid 80's and that was the only problem it ever had

A good crimp would prevent failures

Thanks gents, and thanks for that link rklessdriver. Maybe late '80's then. The more I play with it, like a kid with a new sling shot, the more I like it. Going to have to load up some more GDHP's. I think I have some 210 as well as 200. Never loaded the 210.
