hey, im looking for a rifle, something that wont break the bank, new and made in the USA.

Anything, dont care if its at wally world, whatever. from 223 to 4570, as long as it will reach out and touch someone to 400 yards, max.

Stevens 200 in the caliber of your choice combined with a Bushnell banner 3x9x40 will meet all your requirements including budget. If you're a savvy shopper you can buy em for under $300

I agree. It's the Savage 110 action. Shooting Times called it "possibly the best value in a bolt action rifle". I own a Savage 110, and I am a fan. They are nothing fancy, but they shoot great!

Here's a link to Shooting Times review of the Stevens 200...

wow, you guys are quick!! awesome, i WAS going to say im a skinflint, so preferably under 300. now to throw something else entirely in, but is it possible to get a new us made rifle that is semiauto for under 400?

I'm not a linguist, but I don't think this can possibly mean anything but that you are planning on shooting someone.

If you're going to shoot a deer or a target, wouldn't it make more sense to say "a deer" or "a target" rather than "someone"?

It's a figure of speech, but it's completely tasteless.

No not in the calibers you are looking. A Hi Point Carbine in 9mm or .40 cal can be had for around $200. You used to be able to get AKs for $300 but not no more.

I doubt the OP is talking about shooting someone, it's just a popular phrase, you took time out of your evening to ask this?

nuts, i was sort of wondering about that. oh well, this stevens 200 looks pretty slick, and its even union made!! pretty sweet, considering im a teamster.

thanks for the help guys!

Marlin XL7 or XS7. $279 at Academy and a lot say they are better than the Savage.

I see Marlin XL-7s in .30-06 and .270 go for $300 all day long. They are getting nice reviews and it feels better in the hands (to me) than the Stevens.

Just bought a Marlin XL7 in .270win for my son.

Depending on the game, 25-06, 270 or 30-06 are fine out to 400yds. For the price you're not getting a target rifle, but I got the black composite stock version in .270win out the door at my local dealer for right at $310. (scope mount is included. Rings/scope extra.)

Marlin is supposed to come out with the short action line soon in .308, 7mm-08, and I think .243.

will a 30-30 do 400 yards accurately? id figure that to be the outer reach of its range

NO! only in someones dream.

A 30 30 is a brush gun. it should never be used anything other than paper over100 yards.

Not on your list as a commie gun but look at an sks. with ammo prices skyrocketing don't over look a 22. you can do a lot of cheap training with a 22LR.

Ummm....with newer ammo, the 30-30 is a 300 yard rifle. As for the SKS, they have similar ballistics to that of a 30-30.

Id say the Stevens 200 as I had a Savage .308 that was a very accurate rifle. You could then put in an after market trigger like Rifle Basix and have a great trigger too.

He never implied planning. Only the ability. I can think of lots of legal reasons to have that ability.

In the "budget-aware" category, 2 makes come to mind. Savage/Stevens & Mossberg.

I have shot a few of the Savage & Stevens rifles, and I have a Mossberg ATR-100 in .30-06. My ATR-100 will do well under 2"@100Yds with most cheap commercial soft-point ammo in MY hands.

I haven't even seen the new Marlin XL series, so I have no comment on them.
