"...relatively inexpensive 45-70 Gov't ammo..." Cabela's wants $189.99 per 100 for Ultramax 405 grain lead, 'Cowboy' loads. Otherwise, it's all over $30 per 20.
"...not set up for that YET..." A Lee Loader(the plastic hammer powered die) runs $35.98. They'll turn out perfectly good ammo, but don't use the scoop. Buy a scale as a minimum. The scoops can vary the powder charge plus or minus a full grain.
That BVAC is a good deal - did a quick calc on reloading 405 grain rounds and $1/round is about what you could handload for if buying new brass...
Keep the brass though, because about half of the cost of that handload is the brass itself. The same load with "free" brass drops to under 50c per round.
That BVAC 405 grain load chrono'd 1100 FPS out of my guide gun and leaded up the barrel terribly. It was accurate though, and comes loaded in new Starline brass. It's always out of stock, I'll have to pick some up tomorrow on my way home from work.
I was actually surprised to find Remington semi-jacketed 405 gr at my LGS for $29.99 . While not a steal, it was reasonable. I picked up 3 boxes. I'm going to check out some of the links you all posted too. Thanks.
Actually the Hornady Leverevolution ammo is cheapest in my neck of the woods, about $26 a box. But I reload and cast my own so I'm at about 25 cents a round
Around these parts, Hornady LR's are $32 a box. They used to be the least expensive. Then I found some Black Hills 405 gr for $32 which used to be about $40. Today I found the Remington 405 gr for $30. When I'm done building a work bench I'll get a reloading set up.
Before I had a place to set up a press and all, I used a Lee Loader to handload for my .45-70. The simple tool takes time but it saves a lot of money and makes accurate ammo.
