Cheap Ammo

I have a Remington 870 Combo, and am getting hammered with the prices of Ammo. Is there anywhere that i can get Slugs for cheap.
I will not re-use ammo, don't have it in me.
I live in NY.

And why not re-use shells?

Shotshells are easier to deal with than brass, and a lot of competitive shooters reload, because they like what they can do with their ammo, price notwithstanding.

I've had no problems with Wolf shotshells, other than personal gripes about the funky smell.

They don't pattern as well as more expensive brands, but I'm not a skilled enough shotgunner to notice the difference.

Dicks Sporting Goods had Brenneke KO slugs for $1.85 a box of 5 last time I was there. As far as just cheap shells to shoot informal clays, check out Walmart or any of the big chains. They normally have 100 rd deals for anywhere between $13 and $16.

I'd suggest you go out and buy a couple of books on it.

You'll need the reloading data. Figures pulled off some random website may be inaccurate and unsafe.

If you do opt to reload, expect to dish out at least $500 for equipment. I don't know how much shooting you do, but I don't get the feeling that you shoot enough now to justify the expense.

$500 will buy a fair number of shotshells, your time has some value, and shot primers and powder aren't free.

One thing you can do though is to purchase good quality shotshells (STS, Winchester, etc) and then sell the once fired hulls. I no longer load 410's but I have no issue ponying up for good shotshells and then selling the once fired hulls to help pay for the next case.

I'm not sure about slugs; I was looking. I'm a shot reloader; slug hunting may exist here, but generally we hunt with rifles.

However, good shotshell reloaders, for moderate-volume reloading, are about $165 brand new. The Sizemaster and a few miscellaneous things like plastic funnels from the corner drug store are all you need.

You can mold your own slugs (easier than it sounds; I molded good muzzleloader bullets when I was a kid). Then you can load them in a standard reloader, with relatively low charges, for low-recoil target loads.

For hunting, you can buy slug rounds, of course, unless you get 25 deer per season or something. I'm assuming you want these for practice or amusement.

If you don't need high-volume reloading capabilities, get a Lee Load ALL II press (I have one myself, probably the cheapest way to get into shotshell reloading) and just follow the instructions:

You can load birdshot, buckshot or slugs with this press (the charge-bar works for the birdshot, but the last two are put into the shell by hand).

Not much to it at all.

True. I wouldn't tell a trap or skeet shooter to get a Load-All, but to load up some slug rounds, it'll work fine.

Clay shooters go through a LOT of shells, sometimes hundreds on a Saturday morning. Slug shooters don't need to be able to load that many at a time.

If your going to shoot alot you'll want to roll your own.

Start here:

Get books.

Then it's up to you on supplies: If you're only shooting slugs you should be able to get started for $100 +/- $20 for a jug (1 lb) of powder, $3.00 for 100 primers or you can get 1000 for around $25, bag of 250 wads <$10, and a Lee Load-All or Roll Crimp Tool $20. $25 for 100 slugs.
