I picked up an ol' 870 Wingmaster police riot gun and want to mount a flashlight on it. Has anybody used this Streamlight rail mount? http://www.opticsplanet.net/streamlight-rem-870-tactical-mount-69906.html I like the idea, but it looks like it would defeat the ratcheting of the end cap and cause it to loosen. Any thoughts? I don't have an extended mag tube and don't plan on putting one on, so I'm looking for something to attach to the barrel or like this one attaches. I'll probably be going with an inexpensive light like a Surefire G2.

I had considered going this route too, but ultimately decided to get something different. However, here are the installation instructions, they might help you decide.

I'm considering that mount, M2 Carbine, but I'm concerned about the sight bead being completely obscured by a mount. The barrel I have just has the bead directly on the barrel, but I've added a Tru Glow II that provides a little additional height. Can anyone comment on how high the top clamp on one of these Leaper / UTG barrel mounts comes up on the barrel? Does it render the front sight useless?

Thanks,

I would suggest spending a bit more money and get this mount from Brownells:

Very solid piece designed to fit on the extended mag tube.

Here it is on my 870:

I have over 100 rounds of slugs and birdshot through it and it hasn't budged.

Mike,
Either hole can be used to attach the mount, depending on the diameter of the barrel or mag tube.
I use the lower hole for mounting to the mag tube (above Ithaca picture) by leaving off the top plate of the mount.
Even though it looks like you can use both holes at the same time, with the mount clamped to the barrel and mag tube, it doesn't work.

I just tried the mount on a 12ga barrel with a bead. The top of the mount does prevent you from seeing the bead.

The mount that carterbeauford posted will allow you to see the bead. I've got about the same thing in my Rem 870 to give added support to the extended mag tube.
I'm not sure how well it would hold up to the 12ga recoil while holding a flashlight but it may work fine.

Thanks, M2! This gun doesn't have a mag extension and I don't plan to add one, so I was looking at barrel and forend solutions.

Is a mag extension a option?
A couple more shells in the tube is a good thing.

Then you could use one of the mag tube rail mounts.

shappy0869, Tell me more about your laser please. Also if you have a website, could you send that also.

Thanks
Jeb

Jeb,

The laser is from LaserMax and is called the Uni-Max. Retails for $189 but I paid $150 delivered.

Specifications:
For: Picatinny; Mil-Spec; Weaver Style Rails

It works great indoors or in low/no light, but it is hard to see in the daytime. I do hear they are coming out with a green laser version that should be better for daytime use.

AustinMike,
I used one of those Streamlight rail mounts on my 870 with an M3 light and it didn't loosen or effect the end cap at all. It's a good solid set up for the money.

Mike,

I've been using them since they were out in prototype, and never had a problem with them.

I also have one of these mounts and have had no problems with it loosening.

Thanks for all the input, ya'll. I ended up piecing together a fairly cheap solution with things I found on ebay while I had the time to search over the holidays. Found a new forend with rails for about $25 delivered and got a Viking mount locally for about $20. Invova T3 was about $50 delivered. It feels really solid. I'll take it out soon and blast some shells through to see if anything shakes loose.
