Well, as many others i was in search of a "cheap" spotting scope. Over 100 dollars for me was entering the realm of...not really needing to buy one. All the research i did pointed to the realization that a "good" spotting scope was well beyond my price range, being a couple to several hundred dollars. That just wasnt going to happen.

While browsing in walmart one day, i spotted (excuse horrible pun) this Simmons Blazer spotting scope, for $59. I thought, well...its a simmons, which ive actually had good luck with in the past, and its 20-60x60..which is what i wanted. I went home and tried to search the internet for any info...reviews..discussions...nothing. Nobody even recognized the simmons product number, not even walmarts own website. Fishy.

Since all i want to do is be able to see bullet holes at 100-300 yards, i gave it a shot. After all, it is walmart, and im very good at keeping recipts. ;) So i went back, checked to make sure it had all the items in the box, and took it home. ONCE home, i took it all out only to realize the tripod was damn near broken in half. (It was in its own little box inside, something i should of checked.) UUGHH...back to walmart. Once returned and back at the sporting goods department, my feeling about the item certainly has gone down. Looking at the remaining boxes, which all looked as if they were with the troops that stormed the beaches of normandy, i was thinking "maybe its a sign?" My gaze couldnt help but to look over at the Bushnell Sentry's pakage, in its what seemed to be at the time near indestructable hard shell case...for only 15 dollars more. But NO!! I need more than 36x!! So before logic set in, i bought another simmons as quickly as possible, after doing an EXTENSIVE check of the box contents. Lets try this again...

Now home, it all goes together well. The scope doesnt seem to be THAT bad in quality. I test all the diff zoom powers, while adjusting the focus, and they all seem to be fine. The tripod has many adjustable functions, and a level built right in. Even the lens cap has a sweet compass in it incase i get lost at the range!! whoohoo

Anyway, long story short (maybe too late for that). It seems it will be fine for what i want. I have seen some mention it sells for 40-50 dollars at the walmart near them. Does it have amazing durability and clarity as a nice leupold? Maybe not...i dont know. But now i can see my bullet holes untill it breaks, and when that happens, i have that good ol' walmart recipt.

Cheers.

Here is a phone pole at about 300 yards (maybe more), with my little point-shoot camera held up to the eye piece. The camera makes it looks MUCH worse than just with the eye.

For $60, seems to be hard to beat.

If it makes you happy for what you use it for, than it's a winner.

I actually need one of those to watch the deer during late summer. My binos are a bit too weak to count points.

I think that if you were to list the qualities of optics, you would find that magnification is the cheapest. Brightness, crisp focus, depth of field, and ruggedness are all more expensive.

As far as ruggednes and other qualities i need it to do two things: Be rugged enough to make it from the closet to the car to the range and back again...and be able to see bullet holes at maybe 100-300 yards. All of which it can do. So far it seems like it fits the bill.

I imagine that even the cheaper spotting scopes aren't terrible if you don't expect them to be zoom/macro lenses.
if all you gotta do is zoom and see some holes in mediocre clarity, don't spend a lot of money. If you have a difficult time seeing holes, I find, using a target that isn't black helps. Try orange or red.

Hey you got a winner there. I use one similar to what you have except its branded Winchester. Probably made by the same people. Works great and like you its rugged enough to make it to the range and back again and to see .223 holes in the target at the ranges I shoot, thats all I need. And like you seem to be not in the need to impress anyone.

I'm surprised you found a cheap (oops, I mean inexpensive) spotting scope that has the off-set eyepiece configuration. You'll like that feature.

Sorry to dig up old Threads but all i did was google this scope and i ran into this post.

I went to Wal-Mart tonight and actually with out any intention, i cruised by the sporting section and saw this exact scope sitting on the shelf! I had no idea wally world had spotting scopes because im there probably 2-3 times a week and have never seen them before...

Now i didn't purchase it tonight because im waiting till Payday Friday but i will be purchasing one soon!

I did open it up at the counter and took a look through it and honestly i could read the description on a Coffee Pot box about 100+ yards from me. Now for 60 bucks... that's exactly what im looking for! It comes with a nice zip up case and a tripod that extends from 15" up to like 52" i believe it said.

I think it will be plenty of power for ranges of 100-300 yards. Look forward to buying it!
