Trying to do some research and pick one out. I want a Semi... assault style if I can say that here. Since I have a Mosin I was thinking about a Dragunov if I could pick out a decent unit. The 7.62x54 has proven to be about the cheapest shooting you can do. My second choice looks like Russian ammo too the 7.62x39 but I only know of the AK-47. I'm open to the M style Semi's if the ammo is cost effective (no more than .30 a round). Price range for the Semi is <$1000 and I would like something that you can add mods to later even if the out of the box piece isn't the best.

Oh... for me I personally would rather pay a little more for the firearm up-front to have cheap shooting ammo. More shooting is better :)

I'm still learning here but have heard the SKS name. Is it a Dragunov style 7.62x54 and where would you buy one? I want to either do a scope or red-dot on this one. I left the Mosin with just iron sights and plan on keeping it that way. Are there deals out there on 5.56/.223 ammo like Russian surplus?

an sks is a semi automatic rifle chambered for 7.62x39 that utilizes a fixed 10 round magazine.

If your looking for a dragunov styled rifle in 7.62x54, a PSL would be the cheapes option for that and for a few hundred dollars more you can get a Vepr which is more traditional in looks but the quality looks to be a step above the PSL. Other than those, a russian dragunov will require a huge break off of your bankroll

I have a ruger mini-14, romanian wasr/10(ak-47 copy), and a bushmaster ar-15. All were under $1000. Now on to accuracy. The very best I have shot with the mini-14 or wasr was 1.5 inches at 100 yards. Most of the time it is between 1 3/4 to 2 inches. My bushmaster with good ammo is 1 inch at 100 yards all the time.

That being said I don't regret getting any of them. I personally would go with a wasr it only ran me $495 and has functioned flawlessly from day one. You have to buy good magazines though. My friend bought one with and some really old looking mags and was having problems. He then tried one of my tapco mags and the fail to feeds stopped. Buy good mags and you won't have problems. I also like the sks but 10 rounds with a stock firearm is not for me. On a bolt action or pistol I find it ok but for semi-auto I like not having to reload 10 rounds by hand or stripper clip when I'm empty.

SKS, or get a converted Saiga AK. Plenty of good AR's in your price range also, if you like that sort of thing. Right now we are spoiled by lots of cheap surplus 7.62x54r, but when it dries up in the future, it will get expensive to shoot.
