On page two of the latest Cheaper than Dirt catalog (next to the table of contents) there is a long column about this ammo that they claim will blow a 5" wide hole in tissue that is 5" deep, and will not penetrate, even though it will go through a telephone pole.

The whole thing sounds like BS to me.

CTD was one of the WORST OFFENDERS Of the Last ones EVER scam during the AW Ban!
They were selling cobray mags at $49.95 untill the day the ban expired =next day they were $19.95$
Business is business BUT getting shafted all the way to the bank Left me with a VERRRRYYYyyyy sour taste In my mouth about CTD. R-Guns was another great Offender Of Taking advantage of our Poor situation -- IF a gas station Gouges you During a chrisis --DO you feel happy going back after the Prices drops to normal --I for one will never do business with a Gouger again

CTD is one of those companies that used to put out really great catalogs and have eventually devolved into what they are today. Sportsman's Guide is another, they used to have great milsurp gear, especially Eastern bloc stuff, now its just mostly overpriced factory overruns and the like.

After I looked at their shipping charges, I really do think that Cheaper than Dirt should change their name to Cheaper than Dysprosium. It would be more truthful and they wouldn't even have to change their initials.

Hat tip to my high school chemistry teacher. :)

even though it will go through a telephone pole.

I'd like to see that!

About twenty years ago, me and a few other bored teenaged friends decided to see what it would take to shoot a good sized telephone pole in two. It was in very good shape, and about 10" in diameter at the ground. (It needed to be removed anyway, and at the time it seemed like a worthy scientific endeavor.)

We were armed with an AR-15 shooting FMJ, an old police issue 12 gauge shooting slugs and a couple of Ruger 10/22s shooting hot hollow points. I don't recall how long it took exactly, but I do recall that it used up all our ammo on at least three separate trips! I also recall a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach after adding up what we spend on ammo for our little project. :(

I read that too.
I once thought Cheaper Than Dirt should change their name to Expensive As **** but now I think it should be Lyin' Like Hell

This about sums it up!!

Grant, I don't think the CTD store is associated with CTD in catalog form. Kind of odd. The store is fine, so far as I've seen.

They do sell some good things and I do buy from them on occasion. Their prices on some items are pretty darn good.

Since they are a retailer, if you guys don't like them, just don't buy from them.

I suspect that one of the ways that distributors keep the costs down is that they charge manufacturers for catalog space - the descriptions in most catalogs are in fact paid advertising by the manufacturer.

That cuts two ways:
  • You get a cheaper catalog.
  • The manufacturers can say whatever they want.
If you understand the way it works, it's not a bad system (in my opinion). How much would Midway have to charge me for that big glossy catalog if the advertisers weren't paying for it?

Name should be "Cheap As Gold dust."

I went in there and found a few 'deals', but 'few' means I can count them on only one hand. CETME furniture kit is a good deal, and the spare HK 91 stock set is a good deal, BUT ammo is thru the ROOF (like everywhere else), gun prices are high, and DVD prices are full-pop.

It is mostly a 'full pop' store.
