JDGray: I live 45 minutes from Powder Valley and it's become my #1 weekend vacation spot.
It's a metal building in the back 40 of some fellas ranch, and is nearly impossible to find. Mailbox has a name, and the address number...that's it. Nothing that says powder valley. I asked the fella who runs the place about how much of his building was full. (he's got a small office as soon as you come in the door with three desks, that's all the further you'll get as a customer) and he tells me "it's 3/4 full, we're busier than we thought we would be this year. 12,000 square feet" nice...very nice. I asked him if he could put in a batting cage and he said "we thought about it once, too full now." I told him I'd do whatever I could to help him get enough space for his batting cage....that's why I'm sharing this story with you guys.
I then asked him
"how can you sell this stuff cheaper than most places can stock it?"
"we buy in huge quantities, hence the big metal building. We process around 90 orders on an average day"
"Wow! how long does it take to pick an order! you guys must spend all day running in and out of your storage building!"
"pretty much."
"how much is an average order"
"no idea. Since you pay a hazmat fee on 1 primer or a million primers, most people order in enough quantity to last a while, and that saves us having to fill a billion orders a day."
Essentially, they are the busiest place that can sell to the common reloader I've heard of. They are also the cheapest I've found...it's a vicious cycle, the busier they are, the cheaper the components are because they can buy 1,000,000 Winchester primers at a deeper discount and know that they'll sell them quickly.
Do everyone a favor and at least consider them for your next purchase. Their prices are the best I've seen...probably because they have the best inventory and buying strategy I've seen too.
