Gun lock giveaway goes nationwide

A gun safety program that started in Oklahoma will provide gun locks to more than 20 million people in the 50 states and four U.S. territories this year, Lt. Gov. Mary Fallin said Wednesday.

Fallin, credited with helping launch the National Shooting Sports Foundation's Project Child Safe, said the project will distribute 304,000 free gun locks in Oklahoma this year.
"Since initiating Project Child Safe in Oklahoma, I have found it to be exceedingly effective in protecting children in our state from becoming a victim to senseless firearm accidents," Fallin said.
Oklahoma was the first to conduct a statewide gun lock giveaway. Fallin suggested to program directors that a national effort might be effective.
Dee Dee Dockins, spokeswoman for Project Child Safe, demonstrated how to use the locks on a semiautomatic weapon.
"This is a no-questions-asked program," she said. "Our goal is to educate and save lives. Whether you are a gun owner or not, it's important to teach children about gun safety."
The program drew support from Gov. Brad Henry. He said it promotes sensible gun ownership and "reminds us to keep the safety of our children in mind at all times."
Officials from Project Child Safe, which also includes education about responsible firearm ownership and storage, honored Fallin with an award for her efforts in the program.
The Oklahoma Association of Chiefs of Police, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and other law enforcement agencies have teamed up to get the locks out to Oklahomans.
Oklahoma Chiefs of Police President Jim Cox said officers who investigate accidents involving unintentional injuries caused by guns see firsthand how important education and safety programs can be.
A Project Child Safe bus will travel across the state for the next 17 days distributing the locks.
The locks can be used on handguns, rifles and shotguns.

Are you stating its a good thing bad thing or just showing it to the masses?

I had totally forgot about Henry still was thinking Keating:)

I think it is a good thing to have a governor who makes pro-gun statements. Considering that a 4 yr. old girl was injured the same day by a gunshot wound, the timing of the lock distribution couldn't be better. For those who choose to use the locks, it is a good option to have. Gun owners and children alike need to use a certain amount of common sense, accidents with guns can be deadly, and guns demand respect.

It is also a good thing living in the gun friendly state of Oklahoma. Tv news yesterday reporting on the 4 yr old girl did not slant the reporting to the negative side of gun ownership. They gave an accurate report of the accident, and followed it up with the gun lock giveaway program and a short clip of how to use the gun lock, which was filmed in the gun range.

Here is the article about the 4 yr old. Her grandpa needs some lessons on responsible gun ownership!

A 4-year-old girl was in fair condition Wednesday after shooting herself in the chin with her grandfather's gun.
Sanna Marie Carmona was standing next to her grandfather, Antonio Moreno Carmona, 73, about 11:50 p.m. Tuesday when she got his handgun from a dresser drawer, shooting herself without his knowledge, Oklahoma City police said.

Officers also found a two-bladed knife on a shelf, a rifle leaning against a south wall and a crossbow rifle on the west wall in a bedroom where Sanna Carmona, another young girl and two other people slept at the home at 239 SE 59.

Police at the scene said the house was not clean or safe after they saw raw meat and old food on the kitchen counter. Food also was on the living room floor and old blood stains from an earlier assault on the wall.

The second girl, who was unidentified, was taken into protective custody.

"Investigators with the police department and Department of Human Services will take a close look at the conditions in the home," police Capt. Jeffrey Becker said. "The last thing we ever want to see is one of the kids left in an unsafe environment."

The captain suggests parents to take a proactive stance by using cable gun locks on all firearms.

There is nothing about the quote you bolded by the Gov to tell me it is pro-gun or anti-gun. Antis talk all the time about "sensible gunlaws." Don't want to rain on any parades, but without other evidence I would not call him pro-gun based on that statement.

I've been living in OK since 1985 and this is the first time I've ever heard of that program. I hope my tax dollars aren't going to support it.

For a Democrat Brad Henry's not bad but I don't have a lot of use for Mary Fallin even though she is a republocrat.

Well at least they're "free". In California you are forced to by one everytime you buy a firearm of any type, unless you own a gunsafe. If you do, you have to provide the receipt of the safe at the time of purchase or you will be charged for the gunlock anyway. I just throw them right in the trash:rolleyes: .

:cuss: California, home of record high gas prices ($2.64 for premium), crappy gun laws, and insanely high cost of living. Ah, I don't think I'll ever leave:rolleyes: .

Sorry, but that doesn't sound pro-gun at all. It's not much more of a stretch to "keep our children's safety foremost in our minds" to hand 'em all in either.

It's the same logic, only to a lesser degree.

Blood from an earlier assault on the wall - old food on the floors- old food and raw meat on the counters - weapons laying about......yeah.... a gun lock will improve the home life for that young lady and others like her. I'm sure that sensible folks like that will employ those sensible measures.

At a Dallas show they were giving out the cable locks as you left.
I thanked the guy for the bicycle lock.
He laughed and gave me two.:D

"He said it promotes SENSIBLE GUN OWNERSHIP"

I've been hearing that phrase for 50 years.
To the anti gun folks the only sensible gun ownership is no gun ownership.
