It looks like Ward Churchill needs to start polishing up the old resume.

BOULDER, Colo. -- The University of Colorado announced Monday that it will dismiss controversial professor Ward Churchill.

"Today, I issued to Professor Churchill a notice of intent to dismiss him from his faculty position at the University of Colorado Boulder," CU Interim Chancellor Phil DiStefano said Monday afternoon...

Nobody much mentions it, but freedom of speech does not nullify consequences resulting from that speech. Freedom brings risk. That is why freedom is so exhillerating. It's the risk that makes life worth it. Mr. Churchill has had a taste of how one's ideas can galvanize a lot of one's peers. Not many of us have had as much freedom that he has had in that regard. He should be elated.

The freedom to give ones opinion sometimes has ramifications that allow those that disagree to register that disagreement. That is also freedom of speech. Maybe also a freedom of association as well.

Maybe there's a job open at the U of Havana or U of Caracas.

Bring in Donald Trump to tell this "Professor" "YOUR FIRED".

Nahhh... Bring in de Goobernator with a Harrier and a Sidewinder (True Lies).

*tango hanging on Sidewinder*
[Ahhnold]"You're fired."[/Ahhnold]
*tango-packing missile launches into tango chopper*

It'd be a funny visual, seeing the WC's reaction to hanging by his coat from a live missile about 50-75 feet up...

Just don't stand too close below. ;)

I followed this last year but lost interest b/c CUs responses were very disappointing when they didn't let him go immediately and they have, I believe, tarnished their reputation for a long time to come.

I think firing his is the right thing to do:

Not because he is necessarily outspoken, but because he is a bigot and hypocrite and preaches hate and plagerized others' work and if any white person were in that position he would have been fired immediately.

I don't know the details of the termination, but I suspect and wouldn't be surprised if it involved a large severance package, which I would be completely against.

It reminds me of a teach in my old high school that was very deserving of firing, but was difficult to dismiss. She had been caught selling a rifle to a student in the school parking lot, there were many complaints about her professionalism and ability as a teacher (I also had her as a teacher and she was disgraceful and distasteful), and she was arrested for shoplifting from two different local stores. The School Board couldn't fire her due to her tenure contracts, so they finally 'bought her out' with a large lump sum payment of about twice her annual salary in exchange for a resignation and positive reference.

Very sad that our educational system is extorted by these types of people.

He is not being fired for his America hating remarks. He is being fired for intellectual dishonesty. Rule #1 of academia is to document your work and give credit where it is due. Taking credit for other people's research/work is the biggest sin on campus, even liberal pinko commie campuses.

If the professors are allowed to plagiarise then why shouldn't students be allowed to copy each other's work too?

Uh, leadcounsel, Churchill IS a white guy.

That's another one of his fabrications...that he's Native American.

His story has changed numerous times regarding his heritage.

The ony "official" tribal affiliation he has is an "associate member" card from the Keetowah Band of the Cherokee.

The Keetowah Band gave out these "associate member" cards to whomever they pleased.

For example, Bill Clinton is also an "associate member" of the Keetowah Band.

Yes, the tribes and nations do get a lot of leeway in determining who is in their tribe or nation.

But there's no documented evidence that Churchill is Native American, other than his repeated claims, and those have changed several times.

a notice of intent to dismiss him

What kind of wimpy statement is that?

Among the academia, the Chancellor's statement is very grave. They will usually understate such issues for the sake of professional dignity.

Churchill's career, as he knows it, is over. He'll be lucky to get on at a junior college.

Pinnedandrecessed has it.

This statement by the Chancellor is a career-ender.

But Churchill has a track record of overcoming career-enders before.

Back when AIM (the American Indian Movement) canned Churchill because well, he wasn't an Indian, old Ward just got his own AIM, and called it "AIM of Colorado" or some such thing.

http://www.aimovement.org/moipr/churchill05.html

Churchill's whole career has been one big con job, and then going on to other con jobs when his previous cons were discovered.

He plagiarized art. His "Masters Degree" is from an "untraditional" and "unaccredited" college.

His "scholarly works" were all plagiarized and fabricated.

He pretended to be a Native American.

And he's always found some sucker willing to take him on afterwards.

Somebody will take this snake oil salesman on.

C'mon. If Softskull Press picked up Bellesiles' book after he was forced to resign from Emory, somebody will pick up Churchill after this.

Heck. Somebody will pick up Churchill BECAUSE of this.....it'll make him more controversial.

Just think of this.

This idiot blew a $90K per year cush job at CU because he couldn't keep his act toned-down a bit.

If he doesn't write that "little Eichmanns" speech, nobody pushes the investigation this far.

Idiot........

I don't know whether to be happy that it happened, or enraged that it took so long.

My parents are both college professors, and they both have tenure, and it would be difficult to fire them too, but I have to wonder, was Churchill a piece of excrement BEFORE he got tenure, or did he keep his mouth shut until he got tenure, and then pull the normal mask off his funny face?

My dad just bought Horowitz' book the hundred most dangerous professors, I need to read it. But when I listened to him on the radio, one thing he recommended, which I have already taken advantage of, is to know your university's academic freedom policy, and don't be afraid to reming a professor about it when they start to forget the difference between fact and opinion.

Churchill got his cushy CU job precisely because his outlooks and his views and his rants and raves corresponded EXACTLY with lots of dominant outlooks and views current in vogue all across higher education.

To give a short answer, he's always been, as you put it mljdeckard, a piece of excrement.

It's just that the excrement he'd made a career out of pushing went along perfectly with the views held by lots of folks in higher ed, especially in administration.

Basically, if it's leftist and fits certain politically-correct templates, it's regarded as gospel truth and solid gold by many in higher education today.

Churchill fit a lot of those templates.

He was an ethnic minority, (or at least claimed to be one and had like long hair and stuff)

He was anti-capitalist.

He was loudly against the evil, capitalistic American Imperialists.

He was loudly against all those evil, ethno-centric dead white European males.

He had published a few books (which he largely plagiarized and fabricated, it turns out) and sold a few paintings (which he largely plagairzied, it turns out) and had made a name for himself for being a leftist academic rock star by generally raising hell.

And the administration at CU ate it up.

They made this loser the HEAD of his department after he'd been there only a few years.

They made this loser HEAD of his department, elevating him over many others with actual PhDs and more experience.

They fast-tracked this phoney's tenure. He didn't have to go through the normal six-year review process to get it.

Basically, the whole sordid Churchill saga reveals just how deep the intellectual and moral rot can go in many places in American higher education.

I say all this as a college instructor with 9 years full-time experience at two different colleges.

Actually I believe his career is just beginning! Due to the leftism on American acedemic institutions this junior Indian wanne-be will receive innumerable offers for both speeches and tenure at other liberal universities; his inevitable book deal is likely in the works; and he will be a fixture for the left and become involved in political efforts by leftists.

Sadly, that is the problem with America; we tend to reward leftist academics that utter wild revolutionary rhetoric. Expect to see "Ward Churchill" t- shirts competing with Che t-shirts across America's leftist university campuses. I wouldn't put it past Ward Churchill to run for political office under an apologetic banner of discrimination and court the leftist secular voters in Colorado... there are a great many there.

The damage done by leftist morons like Ward Churchill will be lasting and felt by our youth for years to come. Worse, America has thousands of leftist radical professors on campuses; that is where they hide since they can't handle jobs in the real world.

Ah, The Wiles Of Academia...

Why a "Notice of intent to dismiss"? They do nothing without a grandstanding alert to the press, ACLU, CIA, the UN, and DailyKos.

As an employee of CU, I'm glad to see him on his way out. Plenty of other people here do fine work, and he was dragging their reputations through the mud, too.
Try this, Chancellor, [Mr Spacely voice]YOU'RE FIRED[/voice].
I expect that the tenure requires they give him some amount of notice of his termination. Perhaps till the end of the semester or something. Whatever, they drug this out long enough that a bit more doesn't matter, so long as he ends up gone.

Yeah. I don't think we'll see him teaching at any actual, reputable schools anymore. Invited to speak at events at them and paid big cash for that? Sure. Hired at some little podunk liberal arts school where none of the other professors have a research reputation? Sure. But the big schools will have people on the hiring boards who aren't from the totally crazy departments on campus, and they'll be cautious, even if they do like his politics.

Mumia-lite?

It's a start. Of course Che-lite will appeal and the whole process will turn him into a fund raising tool ala Mumia Abu-Jamal and Leonard Peltier.

Still the truth has come out on this peice of poo, and that's a good thing. The Univ. of Colarado can now spend their money on getting him fired rather than feeding him.

It is funny how much academia loves socialism and communism. On paper both look really really good.
But once you bring in human nature into the equation it will invariably fall apart. Machiavelli was and is right.
It makes me wonder just how much life experience some of these professors really have. I mean, discussing things with fellow intellectuals in the dry halls of academia and the ivory towers of the elite can only give you a narrow-minded view of things.
The closest thing we have to a large communist system that is successful is the military.
I wonder why more academics don't join the military. Then they could have their cake and eat it too. Which is what most people want anyway.
