Anybody use a chest holster for carrying a handgun when deer/elk hunting? I have a nice 6" S&W 586 that I'd like to carry, and have been wondering about them. There's nice (and expensive!) leather ones, and Cabela's carries a decent looking nylon model.

So, anybody use one? Like it? Etc.....

Do you currently carry it with you while hunting in a belt holster or other type of holster?

Rondog....you might take a look at the Clark Fork chest holsters. http://clarkforkleather.com

I have one of their Avenger holsters. Very well made, reasonably priced. I can see they're getting more attention these days because their order fulfillment is up to 3 weeks. But they make a quality product.

Good luck with your search.

I just bought a Guides Choice from Diamond D . It is a very nice chest holster and very adjustable . Only cons are , price and IMO they come fitting to tight . I am trying to break mine in now .

I have a nice chesty rig from Simply Rugged. I've used it with holsters for several handguns. The best I've found for revolvers is the Flap Jack. The removable flap protects the handgun nicely when fishing and such.

back in 1989 one of the gun magazines had an article about the new Smith & Wesson Mountain Revolver. Front page picture was a guy fishing with one of them in a chest rig. It was the Bianchi UM84R Universal with a chest harness. I was lucky enough to end up with one of those first run revolvers and also bought the chest rig. It works just fine yet and I know that Bianchi still has the holster listed.

Wow, I forgot all about this, was getting ready to start another thread asking the same question! Thanks all.

Found out our local Cabela's has Guide's Choice and (I think) Uncle Mike's, does anybody know what frame a 6" S&W 586 is? Would that be a K frame or L? Something else?

The Clark Fork holsters I have are really well made. I don't have the chest holster though.

Seems to me it would be very uncomfortable quick- esp. with a heavy handgun on your chest, even more so if you have a back pack. And it will probably interfere with stock placement with your rifle at some point- like when you are trying to take a shot at a trophy animal. I would carry strongside. Some hunters I know carry crossdraw to prevent their rifle stock from banging into the holstered handgun on the strongside.

They're very comfortable. Here I am wearing the 7x rig for my .480 Super Redhawk. The Diamond D rig is nice but the 7x is better all the way around. Note the right shoulder is completely open so neither would interfere with rifle use and either should be fine with a backpack.

I'm in here.

Also interested in chest carry, but for a small pistol
(Ruger LC9s; but not a standard Miami rig -- chest
especially for winter, when MUCH insulation is required
and you want that pistol right in the middle where the zips are).

Will read along. Might find a lead ...

But yes, for larger revolvers, my vote is, Simply Rugged. Great work.

I have a camo uncle mikes with the flap . It works just fine!

Yes, I have a chest holster I built for my Thompson Center Contender (Super 14) when hunting deer. I built the whole thing, and it worked pretty well for my first deer. However, I think if I had it to do over again, I might have made a leg holster instead. Across the chest is fine, but mine did not provide a real solid secure hold on the relatively heavy 14-inch pistol. I could get it to feel more solid, but then it was squeezing my chest. Your experience might be different.

I'm a Simply Rugged fan. It is easily convertible to be a strong side or cross draw holster as well. One holster to do it all.
