Chinese Paratroop (Cowboy Companion) Range Report

Chinese Paratrooper (Cowboy Companion) SKS Range Report

I took my new (to me) Chinese Paratrooper (Cowboy Companion) SKS to the range for the first time today. Overall I'm very pleased with the little carbine. It is accurate & reliable. I put a total of 140 rounds (40 Silver Bear & 100 Wolf) through the rifle without any FTF/FTE. The small carbine does have quite a boom, & I noticed the occasional flame shooting from end of the barrel. Recoil was negligible, maybe slightly more than my Yugo's, but then that kinda hard to tell because the SKS has so little recoil anyway. No problem putting 10 rounds into mostly 1 hole at 25 yards, & keeping 10 rounds in the black at 50. At 100 yards it was a little harder with the open sights & the pale orange targets I was using, but I managed to keep all rounds on the target.

Only one mishap which still has me a little confused. At approximately 30 rounds I had smoke come out from around the bolt, & from around the pinned in barrel (where it goes into the receiver). I immediately stopped shooting, & ejected the unfired round from the chamber & emptied the remaining rounds from the magazine. I then picked up the last round fired from the ground, & it had a pierced primer. I proceeded to disassemble the rifle to check for damage, but could find none. I proceeded to shoot the remaining 110 rounds from the rifle without a hitch. None of the other 139 spent cases or primers appeared peculiar in any way. None of the other primers were even close to being pierced. Otherwise, as I said the rifle was 100%, & I am quite pleased with this purchase.

Forgot to mention, the trigger was only "so so", with a good deal of travel before firing. Probably not as nice as my Yugo triggers. Also ejection was a little erratic, in that sometimes spent rounds were ejected high, sometimes they were ejected low, sometimes to the front right, sometimes to the rear, & occasionally straight up. I figure this was mostly ammo related. Overall I rate the Yugoslavian as the better made firearm, but the Chinese functioned quite well, & at least in the Para configuration is much more handy.

Since my original post, I've found out that a number of people over on the SKS forums have experienced blown primers with Silver Bear.
