I have a new to me Winchester model 1400 Mk2 semiauto. It's in great shape. I bought it to try my hand at trap/skeet shooting. It's always looked like fun, but I never wanted to invest in a gun to try it out, until I found this 1400.

Anyhow, it came with what looks like a stainless steel choke tube installed. It's flush with the barrel, and when I took it out, it was marked "IC" on the side. I've been told by several people to get a modified choke for shooting clays. I'd like to buy the choke locally.

My question: can someone give me a specific brand and model number of modified choke that will fit flush in my shotgun?

I've looked at different tables of compatibility, but they aren't specific enough. I'm new to the whole shotgun/clays thing, so the choke concept is a little confusing.

Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.

Tim,

What you need for your 1400 is a "Win Choke", so called. They are readily available on-line or at most any gun shop. However, for starting out in sporting clays, I'd stay right with the IC (improved cylinder) choke you presently have. I have every imaginable choke for my shotguns, but usually find myself using IC or Lt. Mod at the most. "Most" S.C. targets can be broken with IC, so don't let people talk you into getting a tighter choke than you really need, especially as a beginner. Now, if you want to give Trap a go, then think about getting a Mod choke.

Good luck,

RUT

I believe it takes a standard Browning Invector choke tube, not the Invector-Plus which was introduced later on. Browning and Winchester are both owned by the same company. Any gun store should have them.
