Who in the world came up with full, modified, improved cylinder, skeet, light modified, etc for chokes?? Why can't there be a simple numbering system that ranks them from most constricted to less constricted?

What would be the fun in that? There is no standard -- each gunmaker does their won thing. Some companies only make the standard four chokes (full, mod, ic, skeet) and some make lots of choke sizes. Briley makes aftermarket chokes in eleven different constrictions for most brands of shotgun. The more the merrier!

Not me. Nor am I responsible for ported chokes and/or extended ones that add a significant amount of weight at the muzzle. Or a complicated series of notches.

Carlson's has the right idea. The actual inside diameter is engraved on the choke. Thus, one can compare constrictions directly once one knows the bore diameter.

My Nu-Line external knurled chokes have the actual number on them as well.

Briley, Carlson, TruLock and others as shared do this.

Why?
Folks like simple and like excuses as to why they miss.
Before screw in chokes, folks blamed fixed choke barrels.
Don't forget one gets more excuses when "constriction" and shells are mixed matched and blamed.

TTBOMK The British came up with "choke". Difference is, the British understood payload to bore, and though many times the guns were "tighter" bore diameters, the shells of the day sorta dictated what worked.

11/16 oz payload from a 12 bore gun the British considered "the proper load".

1 1/8 oz was "heavy" and 1 1/4 oz was "magnum".

Silly Americans, always thinking "bigger is better" and using "heavy" and "magnum" loads.
Silly twits, back down the payload to a "proper load" [11/16 oz] and for instance "quarter choke for the driven game would much more civil".

When the British spoke of "constrictions" they were really knowledgeable about what they were speaking of.

Back in the day, and some us still can - IC patterns from fixed Full barrel.

Today, folks want simple and they want to buy skill targets. They cannot get Full patterns out of a choke marked full . :p

I joked about a digital gauge one inserted into a barrel to "know the choke".
Who cares how accurate, I was thinking "Marketing" - look how well the battery operated choke changing tools sold. :D

Lady friend of mine said a digital read out was "old tech".

"Need to be where they use their iPod and the iPod tells them what they have for choke".

Ya know, if Apple comes out with this, remind me to show them this post.
:p

The Brits do number their chokes. They go Full, 1/2, 1/4, etc.

We have a relatively simple system once you master a few names. Full, cylinder, modified. Then Improved modified is tighter than modified, just like Improved cylinder is is tighter than cylinder. Skeet is just a little tigher than cylinder, but improved skeet is like light modified, just like light full is like improved modified. See, now isn't that as clear as mud?:uhoh:
