i have and use both 357 and 45 but for the bedside it is 357 for ease of use, i run 357 mag if i am out in public, and 38 spl +p in our home my wife cant depend on the safty not being on in an emergancy so revolver wins out over auto for home.... shotgun is too long...

Slugs for HD? You expecting Jason Vorhees? Seriously a 12 ga. 3 inch 000 buckshot shell has what.. 9 pellets? That's NINE 357's hitting their target at once, and you can do it 4-5 times with most pump shotguns.

i don't think i'm giving up and power or capacity to the .45 with a 8-shot S&W M-627

the wheelgun is just easier to leave loaded and placed on a shelf or in a drawer. no feeding concerns, faulty mags or worry about clearing mis-fires...just pull the trigger again.

I prefer a handgun for home defense. Many times I have been woken up by loud noises out side, my car being vandalized for example. I can put a .45 in my belt and under a shirt. Nobody can see it. I can get to it fast and bring it to the threat. When I see the threat I can then determine whether or not to draw. No sense pulling a firearm if you don't need to.

If the threat is inside, I will grab my 590A1. It's cruiser ready with #4. If somebody is in my house without my knowledge, I will pull a gun every time. If not I will practice discretion-which can only be done with a pistol.

I would choose the 12 ga, simply I live in the city in a condo. I do not want to shoot Martha over there in the other condo with wall fire-throughs.

If I had my real choice, it would be a .20ga dbl Coach Gun with exposed hammers and an ammo pouch on the stock..

Give me a S&W 627 in .357 with 8 in the wheel. There is the answer for capacity and a few .38+Ps should take care of the over penetration issue. I've just never been a big fan of .45 ACP, I'm sure i'll catch hell for that. But I was actually interested in getting the Springfield EMP until ammo became an issue last year. The 12 gauge is a great gun, but for something that's ready to go to work, I'd have to go with the .357.:neener:

If some perp is in my home, my plan of action is to lock myself in my bedroom, get on the phone with 9-1-1 and have the shotgun ready in hand. I'm not going looking for him, if he comes through the bedroom door......goodnight! If he's after some of my stuff, he can have it, that's what insurance is for, if he's after me, he's got another thing comin'.

Redneck I agree. As a matter of fact, take what you don't want, cause' the moment the perp forces entry, ''I'll leave the light on!''

12 ga. 870, 3 no.4 and 3 slugs. Equiped with a Surefire grip to light up the night. Since I live in the country, no kids and my nearest neighbor is 1/8th mile away so I don't worry about hitting anyone innocent. I've had the gun for over 25 years and have never had a misfire with it.

I keep a 357 and a 12ga. By the bed. Having to. Choose 1 though it's 12 gauge all the way. I love my 1300 defender with 00 buck 15 pellet by the bed. Sleep good at night knowing it is there next to my wif while I float down the river.

I keep a 357 and a 12ga.

Good combo.

For the "I need a gun NOW" purpose, I still feel the .357 Mag trumps them all.

If I have the necessary time...12 ga. first, .45 ACP next, .357 last. But, if I have almost no time at all...357 Mag (Magnum loads or .38 Special +P) all the way.

Thanks for the replies!

For me it's 45ACP in a 1911 pistol and a Beretta CX4 Storm. For the wife, it's her 44-40 Mares Leg (close enough to the 45ACP, and a good average between the 1911 and the CX4 Storm).

Lately. with the upswing of home invasions, I have dusted off the AR and put it next to my bed, the other side has the 590 and 10/22 and next to me is the 642, Single Six and M10. On the mattress is my SBH. Two dogs outside, one inside and the alarm on "Stay" mode. My first go to gun would be the AR though, that or the SBH. I chose 12 gauge on the poll.

So I own all 3, I keep the 12ga locked in the locker and have a 45 and 357 at the ready. I have kids and so leaving everything in easy to reach places everynight is just not an option, so the locker is left open all night (but still in a closed closet), the 357 and 45 are in high accessable places.

but I just got a 44 mag revolver that I intend to use for hog hunting (wild pigs) and I thought using 44 special might be a great HD option and I don't have to worry about my 45 auto jamming or more likely my wife forgetting to jack the slide should she be the first one to the guns. I'm thinking 2x revolvers are the best option now.

There is no "perfect " pistol or long gun to fit everybody's likes. I had enough of the 1911 in the Navy to not want to go back to that so I found the pistol that fits my needs perfectly.
