Go To HD Gun - Help Me

Not the case. Civilian 55gr .223 JHP penetrates less in drywall and gelatin than 9mm JHP, .45 JHP, and 00 buckshot.

The XD is an excellent choice (and handier than a long gun), but it will out-penetrate a .223 AR in anything but metal and Kevlar, unless you are limiting yourself to FMJ in the AR for some reason.
This is the stuff I have loaded in my AR. "Hornady TAP Personal Defense Ammunition 223 Remington 55 Grain Polymer Tip Point." I read an article at some point a few years ago that recommended it for home defense. I also had a military friend tell me that these would not penetrate as much as a 9mm or 45acp. This is why I included the AR on my list of possibilities.

In response to CB900F, I do have neighbors on both sides within 100-200 feet. Most of the homes are wood frame, sheet rock, and vinyl siding.

Thanks for all the input.

Forget the lights on any firearm. Marketing nonsense. Cops use 'em because they need 'em. You can turn lights on(criminals don't like lights being on). Cops cannot.
I use 'em because I need 'em, too. I don't have multiple light switches to every room in the house wired up in the hallways, and even if I did, I don't have a third hand to flip them with if I should happen to be using a long gun. Nor do I have a backup generator to keep my lights on if the power goes down.

A flashlight is a good thing to have, IMO, and they're not that expensive compared to optics and whatnot.

Here are some interesting drywall tests:

I'd say stick with your Glock 26 for HD. When SHTF, drop a couple 33 rnd mags into your pocket and get ready to rock n roll. I like the idea of having a SG as HD, but I like the Glocks in 9mm with those 33 round mags; more maneuverable throughout the house, lighter, smaller and the cone of shot placement is a bit more tight than a SG with even the most concentrated, rifled choke. Even the smallest of SG slugs can not close the gap between a well placed 9mm round on a small target.
